WTA Declares Equal Prize Money for All Events in 2027

WTA Announces Equal Pay Across Every Event in 2027

The Women’s Tennis Association is set to make history by offering equal prize money to women and men at all its events in 2027. This marks the first time the organization guarantees parity at every tournament on its calendar.

The WTA revealed its 2027 schedule, which includes 55 tournaments held in 26 countries and territories. Each of these events will provide the same prize money for female players as their male counterparts, a landmark achievement for the association.

A New Era for Women's Sports

This upcoming season also celebrates a pivotal moment in women’s sports, with all combined WTA 1000 tournaments awarding equal prize money. This objective reflects a central aim of the WTA since its establishment over 50 years ago.

The announcement named several tournaments that have pledged equal prize money, such as the Italian Open, National Bank Open presented by Rogers, and Cincinnati Open. These join events like the BNP Paribas Open, Miami Open, all four Grand Slams, and many others already committed to equal pay.

Long Road to Equality

The WTA credited pioneers like Billie Jean King and other founders from 1973 for laying the groundwork toward this goal. Current chair Valerie Camillo emphasized the importance of player voices pushing the organization to prioritize financial equality.

"The WTA is stepping up to deliver more for players and tournaments in 2027. We have listened to player feedback on the demands of the calendar, and responded with a meaningful reduction in commitments. Achieving equal prize money across all combined WTA 1000 tournaments is a major milestone for tennis. It demonstrates the WTA’s continued commitment to leading the sports industry in delivering our athletes competitive and financial equality, and is a testament to the enduring nature of the founding vision of the WTA," said Camillo.

Some tournaments, including the Italian Open, had previously promised equal prize money but failed to meet that promise. That will change next year when every event on the schedule will honor equal pay without exception.
