Hamilton Concentrates on Ferrari's Quest for Second in F1 Constructors' Championship

Hamilton Shifts Focus as Drivers’ Title Slips Away

Lewis Hamilton has accepted that winning another Formula One drivers’ championship this season is unlikely. Instead, his attention is now on helping Ferrari secure second place in the constructors’ standings. This would mark progress compared to last year and set a foundation for the future.

Current Standings and Championship Outlook

With five races left in the 2026 calendar, including the upcoming Mexico Grand Prix, Hamilton trails Mercedes teammates in the points race. He sits at 241 points, just one behind George Russell. Meanwhile, Kimi Antonelli has nearly wrapped up the title with 365 points.

"Second place is not something I focus on. Winning the championship is the only thing I care about," Hamilton stated on Thursday.

Transition from Mercedes to Ferrari

After spending 12 years with Mercedes and capturing six world championships there, Hamilton joined Ferrari last year aiming to bring the team back to the top. The team finished fourth in 2025.

"There’s a good vibe and more energy this season," Hamilton commented. "Last year wasn’t much fun for any of us. We’ve come a long way."

Strong Performances Boost Ferrari’s Position

Ferrari currently leads second place by 119 points over rivals Red Bull and McLaren, thanks to recent podium finishes. Hamilton took third in Bahrain, while teammate Charles Leclerc earned third in Singapore and the United States.

"In the Constructors Championship, both drivers have reached the podium over the last three races—between Charles and me, we’ve come a long way," Hamilton said. "And this is just the beginning; there’s more to come."

Ferrari’s Legacy and Future Goals

Ferrari boasts 16 world champion drivers and 15 Constructors Championships, but its last drivers’ title was won by Kimi Räikkönen in 2007, and it has not claimed the Constructors crown since 2008.

"My sole focus is making sure to secure second place in the Constructors Championship—the team deserves it," Hamilton said. "It’s a huge improvement over last year and something we can build on for next year."

Looking Ahead to Final Races

After Mexico, the F1 schedule heads to Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi. Hamilton plans to use these events to prepare for next season.

"After this weekend, I will use the races as a test for next year’s championship—looking at how we can improve the car," he explained. "That is my sole focus: ensuring we have the right brakes for next year and confirming that our engine outperforms the others."
