Kimi Antonelli Extends F1 Lead with Unexpected Mercedes Victory at US GP

Kimi Antonelli Surprises Everyone with Win at US Grand Prix

After a tough start to the weekend, Kimi Antonelli shocked the Formula 1 world by taking the top spot at the United States Grand Prix. The 19-year-old extended his lead in the championship, overcoming what seemed like an impossible situation for the Mercedes team.

Mercedes Struggled Early on

The initial telemetry data from Friday's practice sessions at the Circuit of the Americas suggested a bleak outlook for Mercedes. Their car was off pace, drivers were unhappy with its balance, and the recent aerodynamic upgrades appeared to have backfired.

Andrew Shovlin, Mercedes' trackside engineering director, called the shift from Friday’s poor performance to Sunday’s dominant race win almost miraculous. He admitted the team was lost heading into the weekend, saying the victory seemed out of reach based on their early pace.

Challenging Upgrade Package

George Russell’s post-race comments echoed the struggles; he described the car as "rubbish" after finishing low in the standings. Shovlin acknowledged the upgrade introduced in Malaysia made the W17 difficult to handle, shrinking the setup window and making it harder to get right.

Two Very Different Races for Mercedes Drivers

The tight setup window led to contrasting results between Mercedes teammates. While Antonelli managed to conserve his tires and lead the race, Russell faced difficulties from the start. A penalty for going off-track on the first lap and getting stuck behind Oscar Piastri’s McLaren kept him from gaining ground.

Shovlin noted that Russell's struggle to pass Piastri made his recovery nearly impossible after the early penalty.

Strategic Excellence Under Pressure

Despite challenges from the rough Texas track causing tire degradation, Mercedes’ pit wall held steady. The strategists trusted their calculations, sticking to a one-stop strategy that paid off.

"The strategy decisions weren’t clear-cut," Shovlin said, "but we kept calm, made the right call on the one-stop, and executed solid pit stops."

Credit to Antonelli’s Performance

Ultimately, all credit went to Antonelli for handling a tricky car and delivering a critical victory late in the season.

"Most of all, Kimi should be incredibly pleased with his performances. It was a difficult Friday, but what he produced in qualifying and the race today was exceptional," Shovlin praised.
