Djokovic's Unexpected Basel Defeat Clouds ATP Finals Prospects

Djokovic Stumbles in Basel, ATP Finals Spot at Risk

Novak Djokovic suffered an unexpected loss to Jan-Lennard Struff at the Swiss Indoors in Basel, putting his hopes of qualifying for the ATP Finals in Turin under pressure. This was Djokovic's first time playing in Basel since 2011.

The 39-year-old, aiming for a record 19th ATP Finals appearance, fell 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) to Struff, marking the first time Struff defeated him in nine encounters.

"I knew I needed to go for it. There was only one way to play it. So, I was very, very happy," said Struff, currently ranked 27th in the world. "I had to play my best tennis to have a chance. The last eight times he beat me very, very easily. So, I'm very, very happy and pleased with the performance."

The ATP Finals qualification depends on the top eight players of the year. Currently, Djokovic sits 11th in the rankings, 319 points behind Rafael Jodar, who holds ninth place—the final qualifying position.

Djokovic admitted he felt some rust after his recent win against Ugo Humbert but now faces a tough challenge to break back into the top 10, a spot he has not fallen out of since 2018.

Rafael Jodar maintains the ninth spot due to the absence of injured world number one Jannik Sinner, who will not compete in the ATP Finals.

With the Paris Masters coming up in November, Djokovic has a chance to regain points and improve his standing. He is also chasing the milestone of surpassing Roger Federer with his 19th ATP Finals appearance.

Djokovic holds the record with seven ATP Finals titles but missed the previous two editions due to injury. His last failure to qualify on merit was in 2017, when injuries hampered his season.

Confirmed ATP Finals Participants and Surprises in Basel

A few players have secured their spots for the event in Turin, scheduled from 15 to 22 November. Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, and Ben Shelton are among them, although Shelton faced a surprise defeat in Basel.

Top seed Shelton was upset by Swiss wildcard Jerome Kym, ranked 222nd globally, losing 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-1).
