Gael Monfils Reflects on His Career and Personal Life After Split from Elina Svitolina

Unexpected End to Gael Monfils' Tennis Career

Gael Monfils never imagined his professional tennis journey would conclude so abruptly. Earlier this month, the French player surprised fans by withdrawing from the ITIA's anti-doping testing pool, effectively ending his career before he could compete in the final tournaments he had scheduled, including important home events in Lyon and Paris.

The sudden decision left many wondering about the reasons behind it, especially since these events were meant to be his farewell to the sport. Soon after, news surfaced that Monfils and Elina Svitolina, his wife since 2021, had decided to separate and dissolve their marriage.

Monfils and Svitolina Speak Out on Their Separation

Svitolina publicly shared the difficult news, calling it "the most difficult thing I have ever had to share." She reassured fans that despite their split, they remain on good terms and will co-parent their daughter, Skaï. The ongoing war in Ukraine deeply affected her emotionally and played a key role in her decision.

Monfils responded with a statement defending Svitolina against online criticism. He stressed that although they are no longer a couple, they continue to be a family. He expressed gratitude for her love and support over the years, especially during moments when he considered quitting tennis. He said:

"Elina and I may no longer be a couple, but we are still a family. Though my heart hurts, I am forever grateful to her for her support and love over the years. When I was ready to quit tennis, she gave me the encouragement I needed to continue. And she is the person behind some of my life’s greatest victories: our daughter, Skaï, being the greatest of all."

Monfils also shared his frustration over the lack of kindness shown toward Svitolina, reminding everyone that relationships involve complexities beyond what can be explained publicly.

How the Separation Impacted Monfils’ Decision to Retire

In a recent livestream, Monfils opened up about how the breakup affected him emotionally and influenced his choice to retire earlier than planned. He admitted struggling with his mental state, saying:

"I can't train the way I want, I'm not at my best mentally. I'm not going to pretend, I'm eating less, I'm doing everything less well. It's already very difficult to step onto the court at the end of your career, with emotions you're unfamiliar with, and when you’re also affected and have to think about the future, I just couldn’t play."

The personal challenge has overshadowed what should have been a final chapter filled with farewells to fans. Missing those last matches at his home tournaments has made this period even harder for him.

A New Chapter Without Closure on Court

Both Monfils and Svitolina have highlighted that external circumstances beyond their control contributed to the separation, and neither is to blame. Whether either will share more details later remains uncertain, as does the impact on their future lives and careers.

Although Monfils will miss the upcoming Paris Masters, the tournament has announced a special ceremony to honor his career, celebrating an era shaped by one of tennis’s most charismatic players.
