Djokovic Falls Short at Basel, Remains One Title Behind Federer's Record

Djokovic Falls in Basel, Keeps Federer’s Career Title Lead

Novak Djokovic faced a tough exit at the Swiss Indoors in Basel on Thursday, losing a tight match to Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff. The final score was 6-7 (4), 7-5, 7-6 (5), which means Djokovic remains just one title behind Roger Federer's record 103 career wins.

Struff, ranked 47th, secured victory with his third match point, delivering his 27th ace down the middle. Djokovic, aged 39 and a 24-time Grand Slam champion, saved a previous match point with an ace of his own but couldn't push through in the deciding tiebreaker.

Djokovic had traveled to Basel for the first time in 15 years. He claimed one of his 102 titles here back in 2009 by defeating Federer in the final. Federer, who grew up in Basel and once served as a ballboy at this event, has won this tournament a record 10 times.

Surprise Upset for Shelton Against Local Wildcard

Top seed Ben Shelton also stumbled, falling to Swiss wildcard Jerome Kym 6-3, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (1) during an evening session. Ranked 222nd, Kym pulled off a stunning upset against the No. 4 American, who has now lost three matches this year to players ranked outside the top 100.

Shelton had previously been beaten by No. 140 Otto Virtanen at Wimbledon and No. 117 Nikoloz Basilashvili in Rome. In addition, Shelton lost to seven other opponents ranked between 56 and 87 this season, even as he won four titles across different surfaces.

During Thursday's match, Shelton narrowly avoided defeat twice, saving points when serving at 5-6 in the second set and rallying from two breaks down at 5-2 in the final set. Still, Kym elevated his performance in the final tiebreaker, sealing the win with a remarkable backhand passing shot while lunging toward the net.

Kym is set to face eighth-seeded Jiri Lehecka next, after the Czech player defeated Daniel Altmaier 7-5, 6-4.

Fils and Fritz Advance to Quarterfinals

Earlier in the day, second seed Arthur Fils overcame a slow start to beat No. 34 Alex Michelsen 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5). Fils will meet sixth seed Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals, after Fritz won 6-4, 6-3 against Denis Shapovalov.
