Players Who Defeated Rafael Nadal at the Shanghai Masters as He Never Claimed the Title

Rafael Nadal’s Unwon Shanghai Masters Journey

Rafael Nadal never secured the Shanghai Masters crown during his career, despite being one of tennis’s all-time greats. Retiring in 2024, Nadal amassed 22 Grand Slam titles and claimed 36 Masters 1000 championships, second only to Novak Djokovic. Out of the nine current ATP 1000 events, Shanghai stood as one of just two tournaments where Nadal never triumphed.

Nadal’s Record at the Shanghai Masters

Across eight appearances, Nadal reached the final twice but fell short each time. The first final came in the tournament's inaugural edition in 2009, where he lost to Nikolay Davydenko with a scoreline of 7-6(3), 6-3.

In 2010 and 2011, Nadal exited earlier than expected, beaten by Jurgen Melzer and Florian Mayer respectively. A knee injury sidelined him in 2012, but he returned in 2013 to reach the semi-finals before Juan Martin del Potro ended his run.

The following years saw mixed results: a second-round loss to Feliciano Lopez in 2014, another semi-final appearance in 2015, and a surprising early exit in 2016 against Viktor Troicki. His last outing at Shanghai was in 2017 when he faced Roger Federer in the final, losing 6-4, 6-3.

This made Nadal the only player to lose multiple finals at the Shanghai Masters without ever winning the title.

Nadal’s Thoughts After the 2017 Final

"No. No, no, I just play every tournament with as high motivation as possible," Nadal said when asked if not having won Shanghai drove him harder. "Would not be fair I play here with higher motivation than in Monte-Carlo because I didn’t win here and I won in Monte-Carlo 10 times."
"No, every time I go on court I try my best. I try to play as good as I can. Sometimes I play better; sometimes I play worse. That’s all. Shanghai is an important event. I always put attention in this event. Is true that I was not able to play as good as I would like here that often, but I already play two finals, couple of semi-finals. So was not a bad event."

Nadal missed the 2018 Shanghai Masters due to a right knee injury and skipped 2019 because of a left wrist problem. The event itself was off the calendar until 2023, by which time Nadal was winding down his career with fewer tournaments.
