Mikel Arteta Reflects on Champions League Heartbreak and Sets Ambitious Goals for Arsenal

Arteta Talks About Champions League Pain

Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, has opened up about the lingering pain from their loss in the 2026 Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain. Despite finally winning the Premier League after 22 years, the defeat in Budapest still haunts him and his team.

Budapest Final Defeat Still Hurts

Last May, Arsenal ended a long wait to lift the Premier League trophy, breaking a streak of three second-place finishes. Yet, only 11 days later, they faced a tough setback in Europe. The Champions League final against PSG ended 1-1 after regular time, but Arsenal lost in the penalty shootout. This gave PSG their second consecutive European title, leaving Arsenal with a bitter near miss.

Arteta’s Emotional Reflection

"I still have the scar, like Arsene says. I still have that poison in my veins," Arteta revealed to The Athletic. "It has to stay there because that’s when you learn, and that probably is going to be a massive driver for me and everybody."

He also shared feelings about his renewed commitment to the club: "It’s a privilege to commit my future to the club and to continue to work with exceptional people who want the best for Arsenal. This club is unique, its character and the way it makes you feel, and I have a great sense of privilege that our journey together will continue."

Long-Term Vision Secured with New Contract

Arsenal recently rewarded Arteta’s impact since 2019 with a new contract extending his stay until 2030. This deal makes him the highest-paid manager in the Premier League, earning close to £20 million annually. Arteta’s focus now is firmly on building the club’s future.

"Globally, with our supporters? Great. How are we going to build the next three squads? Great. How the rules of the game are going to change us, and how we’re going to stay ahead of that to take advantage? Great," he said."But this is going to happen if every single day we look after what we built. We make it a little bit better, like software that is upgrading and upgrading. When can it stop? It’s infinite. We have already built a special bond and created memories that will last a lifetime, and what is so exciting is that this is only the beginning of what we can achieve together."

Recovering from Recent Setback

Before the international break, Arsenal suffered a heavy 3-0 loss to Brighton. As they return to Premier League action against Leeds United, Arteta’s squad looks to regain momentum in defending their league title.

Afterward, attention will switch back to Europe as Lille arrives at Emirates Stadium for a demanding Champions League fixture. This stretch will test the squad's depth and resilience across all competitions.
