Luis Enrique Urges PSG to Equal Real Madrid's Champions League Threepeat

Luis Enrique Sets Ambitious Target for PSG

Luis Enrique, head coach of Paris Saint-Germain, has openly challenged his squad to match Real Madrid's legendary record of winning three consecutive Champions League titles. The Spanish manager, who took charge at Parc des Princes in July 2023, has already led the French side to two back-to-back European crowns and three Ligue 1 titles.

On Pursuing Historic Success

The 56-year-old strategist sees no reason to stop after securing consecutive Champions League trophies. PSG began their title defense with a commanding 6-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava last month, reinforcing their intent to continue dominating Europe’s top club competition.

"We've won it twice in a row, but that's no reason to stop. We're built to play in the Champions League. We have an extra incentive: to try and achieve something that only Real Madrid has managed to do so far. It's a special goal," Enrique told the club's official website.

Facing Formidable Rivals

Enrique is well aware of the challenges ahead, especially against teams like Manchester City and Barcelona, both Champions League winners and tournament favorites. He acknowledged the difficulty of the task, stating:

"These are two teams that love winning the Champions League, who have already won it and who are among the favourites. There are six, seven or eight teams capable of winning this Champions League. We're one of them, but it'll be tough and we're not the clear favourites."

Contract Extension and Expectations

Recently signing a three-year extension until 2030, Enrique has now led PSG to 13 major trophies overall. He spoke about the mentality he instilled since arriving, emphasizing the importance of continuous ambition:

"That was our primary objective when we arrived here: to make history. Everyone knew the club had already won major trophies, but there was no trophy more important to us than the Champions League. For me, as a manager, just as for the players, the desire to win constantly is an essential characteristic of the very highest level."

He also admitted the pressure has increased with his new deal:

"I've extended my contract and now I'm under even more pressure to show that I'm ready to carry on and that I still want to win many more trophies for Paris Saint-Germain. It's always the same objective: to win and keep on winning."

Upcoming Challenges Will Test PSG's Resolve

PSG’s determination will be tested immediately with a challenging Champions League clash against Manchester City on Wednesday, followed by a home fixture versus Barcelona on 20 October. These tough matches against fellow favorites will measure if PSG can sustain their dominance in Europe.
