Lisandro Martinez Criticizes Manchester United’s Board After Atletico Defeat

Lisandro Martinez Blasts Manchester United's Leadership Following Champions League Loss

Lisandro Martinez did not hold back in a fiery post-match interview after Manchester United's 2-0 loss to Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano. The Argentine defender sharply criticized the club's management and recruitment strategy amid mounting frustration over the Red Devils’ form.

Michael Carrick’s side have managed just two wins in nine games across all competitions this season, with pressure building on the manager following another disappointing Champions League performance. United conceded a goal within the opening minute and struggled to recover despite creating several chances. The situation worsened when Leny Yoro received a contentious red card in the 74th minute, and Ademola Lookman sealed the win for Atletico.

Carrick’s future at Old Trafford appears uncertain as the club continues to face challenges, but Martinez’s comments suggest the players believe deeper issues are at play beyond managerial changes.

Martinez Targets Club Recruitment Team

The defender pointed fingers directly at the club’s recruitment decisions, especially regarding summer signings. He said:

"I have to control myself a lot, but sometimes it is a reflection on the club at the moment. We had a fantastic season last season, and now we expect more from the top. We needed more players to compete because many teams bring in other players as well."
"I expect more. Yes, 100 per cent. I expected more investment in the summer. I expect more from our technical director, I have to be honest."

When asked which positions need strengthening, Martinez replied:

"I think in general. Last season, we created a base to build an amazing team, but we haven't. He [Carrick] does his best, but every season is different. Everyone has learnt how we play and the system. If we don't change, it's a big problem. You can keep changing managers, but what about other areas?"

Wayne Rooney Responds to Martinez’s Remarks

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, appearing on Amazon Prime's coverage, expressed concern that Martinez's outspoken critique might damage team morale. Rooney stated:

"He's disrespecting his teammates. It's not going to help the situation at the club at the minute."

Off the pitch, the club’s struggles seem to stretch far beyond the field. Longtime observers of United understand that the problems are deeply rooted and unlikely to be solved quickly.
