Danny Mills Calls Title Stripping 'Pointless' Amid Manchester City's 115-Charge FFP Case
Danny Mills on Manchester City's Financial Fair Play Sanctions
Danny Mills shared his thoughts with GOAL about the ongoing Financial Fair Play (FFP) case involving Manchester City. Facing 115 charges related to alleged violations between 2010 and 2018, Mills described the idea of stripping titles or taking away medals as "pointless." He argued that memories of triumphs remain intact, making trophy-related punishments largely ineffective.
Details of the FFP Allegations
The club is accused of engaging in deceptive financial activities during the stated period. An independent commission upheld all but one of these charges. A final decision is expected by January 2027. Speculation includes potential sanctions ranging from expulsion from the Premier League, points deductions, transfer bans, to heavy fines.
Manchester City's Trophy Haul Since 2010
- FA Cup: 2011, plus three more
- Premier League Titles: Eight
- Champions League: One
- League Cups: Seven
- UEFA Super Cup: One
- FIFA Club World Cup: One
- Historic Treble: 2022-23 season
Much of this success came under the management of Pep Guardiola. Despite the allegations, City have consistently denied wrongdoing and are determined to clear their name. There is also uncertainty about whether events after 2018 will be investigated.
Mills Explains Why Retrospective Punishments Are Ineffective
“You can take titles away, irrelevant. You can take medals and trophies away from players, irrelevant. They’ve had those moments, they’ve had those days out, they’ve had those bonuses. You’ve had all the upside of that for a number of years.”
Mills pointed out the difficulty in drawing a line between pre-2018 benefits and subsequent gains. The club’s financial foundation built during the questioned period enabled later successes. Taking away accolades would not erase the experiences and rewards players enjoyed.
“If you want to come and take my Carling Cup medal away [won with Middlesbrough in 2004], come and take it. I still won the Carling Cup. You can buy my medal off me. You didn’t win it, I did.”
He compared retrospective punishment to rewriting history, suggesting it holds little practical meaning after so many years. Mills thinks future sanctions should focus on preventing further breaches rather than undoing past achievements.
Ongoing Legal Process and Club Focus
Manchester City remains uncertain about their ultimate fate as appeals continue and legal discussions unfold. Meanwhile, manager Enzo Maresca and the squad concentrate on upcoming matches and adding more silverware. Their next challenge is an away game against Liverpool, scheduled for Sunday, October 11, 2026.
