Why Chris Kavanagh Can Officiate Manchester City Matches Despite Manchester Roots
Chris Kavanagh’s Role in Manchester City Games Explained
After Premier League referee Chris Kavanagh officiated a match between Liverpool and Manchester City, many fans were left wondering why he was allowed to referee a game involving a club from his hometown area. Kavanagh hails from Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, which sparked debate given the intensity of rivalry and the potential for bias.
Controversy Over Key Decisions
Liverpool's manager, Andoni Iraola, criticized Kavanagh’s call to send off Ryan Gravenberch, who received two yellow cards during the match. This red card came in the 62nd minute, shortly before Manchester City scored three times in just 13 minutes, sealing a 3-0 victory. Iraola described the initial foul as "never a yellow card," calling it a minor incident that didn’t warrant such punishment.
"I think the first foul of Ryan is never a yellow card, never. These kinds of games, just a stomp on the big toe, or something minor. He doesn't even call the foul straight away," said Iraola. "I don't know why after he shows the yellow card, because it's not a situation where it leaves an advantage."
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher shared his view on Sky Sports, saying the first yellow card was too harsh and the referee acted too quickly.
"The first one is not a yellow card it was so harsh. The referee was far too quick to get the yellow card out. The first one is the same," Carragher commented.
Referee Club Allegiance Rules
Fans questioned why Kavanagh, being from the Manchester area, was assigned to this match. Premier League referees usually face restrictions if their personal loyalties conflict with the teams involved. For example, Michael Oliver cannot referee Newcastle United or Sunderland matches because of his connections to the Magpies. Similarly, Australian official Jarred Gillet avoids Everton and Liverpool games due to his childhood support of the Reds.
However, Kavanagh's case is different because his official allegiance lies with Droylsden FC, a non-league club based in Greater Manchester that plays in the North West Counties League Premier Division. Since he supports a non-league team, he is considered neutral under Premier League referee conflict-of-interest guidelines. This classification allows him to oversee matches featuring both Manchester clubs without restrictions.
This approach mirrors the situation of Anthony Taylor, a now-retired referee also from Manchester, who supported the non-league Altrincham team. His non-league loyalty permitted him to referee games involving Manchester City and Manchester United throughout his career.
Current Liverpool Standings and Upcoming Fixtures
The recent loss to Manchester City leaves Liverpool in ninth place after six Premier League matches. With only two league wins under Iraola’s management so far, the Merseyside club faces a challenging upcoming game against Brentford on Saturday.
