Everything You Need to Know About the 2028 Copa America and Its Possible U.S. Hosting

When is the 2028 Copa America?

The exact dates for the 2028 CONMEBOL Copa America haven’t been announced yet, and even the FIFA international calendar has no set schedule for the tournament. Most likely, it will take place between mid-June and mid-July of 2028. For reference, the 2024 Copa America in the United States ran from June 20 to July 14.

One factor to consider is the 2028 Summer Olympics, also in the U.S., running from July 14 to July 30. While most Olympic events center around Los Angeles, soccer matches will be held across various locations nationwide, overlapping slightly with the Copa America’s expected timeframe.

Where could the 2028 Copa America be hosted?

No official host country has been confirmed for 2028. Still, speculation points strongly towards the United States hosting again, similar to the 2024 edition. Reports surfaced as early as December 2025 indicating talks were underway to bring the tournament back to the U.S., with rumors gaining traction on social media in October.

If the U.S. hosts, it would mark the third time in five tournaments that the competition is played there — previously in 2016 and 2024. Since 2015, when Chile hosted, the tournament hasn’t been held outside Brazil or the United States. Argentina last hosted in 2011.

Who will participate in the 2028 Copa America?

All 10 CONMEBOL member nations are guaranteed spots, consistent with every Copa America. In addition, guest teams usually join the competition.

If the event returns to the U.S., the United States, Canada, and Mexico are almost certain participants. The 2024 edition featured three extra CONCACAF teams qualifying through the Nations League: Jamaica, Panama, and Costa Rica.

That year had 16 teams total, but recent chatter suggests the 2028 tournament might expand to 20 teams. This expansion would require reworking the format, and it's unclear whether those extra teams would come from CONCACAF or include invitees from other confederations.

How often is the Copa America held?

The tournament is now scheduled every four years, positioned mid-cycle between FIFA World Cups on even years. For example, with World Cups in 2026 and 2030, the next Copa America falls in 2028.

Historically, the tournament was mostly played in odd years, the year after the World Cup, such as 2011 and 2015 following the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. There have also been additional editions like the 2016 Centenario celebrating CONMEBOL’s 100th anniversary and a 2021 tournament postponed from 2020 due to COVID-19.
