WTA Finals Race Tightens With Muchova, Swiatek, and Kostyuk Fighting for Final Spot
WTA Finals Qualification Battle Nears the End
The fight for a place in the WTA Finals has reached an intense moment. Seven out of eight spots are secured, leaving only three contenders vying for the last position: Karolina Muchova, Iga Swiatek, and Marta Kostyuk.
- Karolina Muchova: 4735 points
- Iga Swiatek: 4190 points
- Marta Kostyuk: 3921 points
Swiatek had the opportunity to take the lead by winning the Wuhan title but was upset in the semifinals by Maja Chwalinska. Swiatek wasn’t fully fit during that match, and it remains uncertain whether this injury will impact her performance in upcoming events. If it does, her chances of reaching the WTA Finals shrink considerably.
Swiatek’s Season So Far
Since 2020, Swiatek has appeared in every WTA Finals, even capturing the trophy in 2023. This year marks the first time since 2021 she has not won a Grand Slam, and apart from a strong showing in Toronto, her overall results don’t quite match those past achievements.
Muchova’s Steady Rise
Though also without a Grand Slam win this season, Muchova has had her best year yet in terms of consistency and results. She remained mostly healthy, earned her first WTA 1000 title, and reached the Wimbledon final. While she ranks seventh in the WTA race standings, Linda Noskova’s Wimbledon championship secures Noskova a spot ahead of Muchova.
Kostyuk’s Breakthrough
Kostyuk has stayed in the hunt thanks to winning her first WTA 1000 tournament and reaching two Grand Slam semifinals this season.
Upcoming Tournaments Could Decide Fate
It’s urgent for Swiatek and Kostyuk to accumulate points quickly. Muchova, with a point advantage, is resting next week while Swiatek and Kostyuk prepare to compete at the WTA 500 event in Ningbo. Swiatek is seeded second; Kostyuk is third. Neither can surpass Muchova with a title here, but a victory could narrow the gap for Swiatek, and for Kostyuk, a title might move her ahead of Swiatek depending on Swiatek’s results.
- Swiatek's potential first opponent: Marie Bouzkova
- Kostyuk's possible opener: Ekaterina Alexandrova
If both players hold their seed positions, they could face each other in the semifinals, a crucial match for the final qualifying spot.
Both are also on the entry list for the Tokyo WTA 500 the following week, where a strong run could propel one ahead in the race, especially since Muchova isn’t playing there or elsewhere that week. The Tokyo field is even tougher, featuring Elena Rybakina, Elina Svitolina, and Iva Jovic.
If the decision extends beyond Tokyo, the players could try smaller 250-level tournaments, though making it to Indian Wells for the WTA Finals right after would be challenging. None of the three are entered in tournaments during that final week, making Ningbo and Tokyo the key battlegrounds for the last slot.
Final Thoughts
With Muchova choosing not to play in Ningbo or Tokyo, the chance to secure the last spot lies entirely with Swiatek and Kostyuk. Their performances in these next events will define their season’s end.
Last year, Elena Rybakina earned her WTA Finals berth with a late surge in Tokyo, then went on to win the title and have her best year yet. This final spot represents more than just recognition for this year’s results; it could set the tone for next season.
All three—Muchova, Swiatek, and Kostyuk—have played key roles in the WTA story this year. Whoever claims this final place will have earned it, while the others will regroup and aim again next year.
