Arsenal's Dilemma: Martin Ødegaard's Future in Question as Bayern Munich Circles
Martin Ødegaard has fought his way back to something close to his peak, but his future at Arsenal is suddenly not as secure as his form suggests.
The 27-year-old endured a bruising 2025-26 season, his rhythm repeatedly broken by injuries that stripped fluency from both his game and Arsenal’s attack. Now he looks like the conductor again. Four goals and one assist in 14 appearances across all competitions, Arsenal joint top of the Premier League, and Mikel Arteta’s side once more moving to his tempo.
This is usually the moment a club locks in its leader. Instead, a dilemma is brewing.
According to Sky Germany, Arsenal are prepared to consider selling their captain if contract negotiations stall. Ødegaard’s current deal runs until the summer of 2028, a healthy position on paper, but the club are said to want clarity well before then. If no new agreement is in place, the plan would be to cash in during 2027 rather than risk watching a key asset run down his contract.
The stance is cold, calculated – and entirely in keeping with a club that has rebuilt its squad by staying one step ahead of contract sagas.
Bayern Munich, long-time admirers of the Norwegian, are watching. The German champions have tracked Ødegaard for years, seeing in him the profile they traditionally covet: a technically gifted playmaker, comfortable dictating games at the highest level, experienced yet still in his prime. Should Arsenal open the door, Bayern are expected to be near the front of the queue.
They will not be alone. If Ødegaard hits the market, the expectation is clear: several of Europe’s elite will move quickly, sensing a rare opportunity to sign a creative midfielder already proven in the Premier League and Champions League.
For now, he remains central to Arsenal’s title push, wearing the armband and driving a side that believes it can finally climb one step higher. But the clock is quietly ticking in the background.
Arsenal must decide: is Ødegaard the cornerstone of their next era, or the sacrifice that funds it?
