Michael Owen Questions Man Utd Board Over Michael Carrick Amid Coaching Instability

Manchester United's Search for Stability in Coaching

Manchester United have cycled through numerous head coaches, including Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, yet the club seems no closer to consistent success. Michael Owen shared his thoughts with GOAL, suggesting that frequent managerial changes damage the club’s image, especially as speculation swirls around Michael Carrick's future at Old Trafford.

The Legacy Left Behind by Sir Alex Ferguson

When Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 after winning his 13th Premier League title, he left behind a monumental challenge. The Scottish manager spent 27 years at the helm of Manchester United, crafting a team that dominated domestically and triumphed twice in the Champions League, highlighted by their famous Treble in 1999.

Failed Attempts to Find a Long-Term Successor

Since Ferguson's departure, no coach has lasted more than three years. David Moyes lasted only eight months, while Solskjaer came closest with 168 games. Carrick, initially an interim appointment, managed 17 matches before earning a two-year contract after securing a top-three finish and Champions League qualification. Now, rumors suggest his position is uncertain.

The club has experimented with various types of managers: big names like Mourinho and Louis van Gaal, former players such as Solskjaer and Carrick, and even promising talents like Ruben Amorim. Yet the issues appear deeper than coaching, making another change potentially harmful, especially mid-season.

Michael Owen Calls for Patience and Stability

"They've tried absolutely everything," Owen said, "and the one time it worked was with Carrick last season, who earned more points on average than any other manager. So why change?"

Owen emphasized that despite a rough start this season, it’s too early to judge Carrick’s tenure. He questioned what alternatives exist and warned against constant managerial turnover, which hasn't helped Manchester United in recent years.

"Every manager gets sacked eventually, but chopping and changing isn’t good for the club or its results," Owen added. "Let him grow. He’s young but has already proven capable of delivering big results consistently. I’d hate to see a weak board force him out prematurely."

Carrick Faces Crucial Upcoming Matches

Currently still in charge, Carrick recently oversaw a 1-1 draw against 10-man Tottenham but faces a critical series of away fixtures. His fate may hinge on performances against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, followed by trips to Leeds United and Chelsea, plus a European match against Como.
