LeBron James Directs 76ers Offense in First Glimpse of Star-Studded Lineup

LeBron James Leads as Point Forward in Philadelphia’s New Look

The Philadelphia 76ers showcased a smooth offensive flow during their first preseason game featuring LeBron James alongside stars like Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, and VJ Edgecombe. The question on everyone’s mind was how the ball would be handled with so many talented scorers on the court.

In his debut Thursday against the Brooklyn Nets, James took charge primarily as a point forward, orchestrating the offense from the start. The team looked synchronized despite this being their first time playing together, shooting an impressive 7 of 8 in the opening minutes.

James Sets the Tone With Assists

James was involved in the playmaking early, assisting on two of the first three baskets. One highlight was a no-look pass that threaded through defenders to find Edgecombe for an easy score near the basket. Another sequence started with a "hockey assist" from James, who delivered a bounce pass to Embiid on the wing during a pick-and-roll. Embiid then found Brown for a dunk, showing crisp ball movement across the floor.

The 76ers' offense seemed well-oiled, moving the ball quickly and efficiently in this early glimpse of their star-studded lineup.

James Prefers Creating Over Scoring Early On

James waited almost five minutes into the first quarter before attempting his first shot, driving to the rim and earning free throws. He ended the quarter with four points—all from the line—and five assists. Meanwhile, Maxey led scoring early with 10 points as Philadelphia held a slim 33-32 lead.

His first field goal came later in the second quarter on a reverse layup set up by Maxey. By halftime, the 76ers led 58-56. James posted 10 points, five assists, four rebounds, two turnovers, and one steal in 18 minutes. Most of his points were from free throws, and he rested during the second half.

Maxey and Brown Step Up as Embiid Struggles With Turnovers

Maxey finished the first half with 14 points on efficient shooting, while Brown added eight points on 50% shooting. Embiid contributed six points and three rebounds but struggled with seven turnovers by halftime.

The 76ers as a whole shot 57% in the first half, dishing out assists on 12 of their 16 made shots. However, turnovers were an issue with 14 giveaways before halftime.

Brown led the team in scoring with 18 points by the time he left the game in the third quarter. The rest of the squad mostly deferred to bench players after halftime.

Early Signs of a Promising Offensive Approach

Though this was just a preseason exhibition, it gave a promising look at how the 76ers might run their offense when the regular season begins. With LeBron James directing the floor as a point forward and strong contributions from Maxey, Brown, and Embiid, Philadelphia showed they could be a well-coordinated and potent unit.
