Cristiano Ronaldo Temporarily Suspended by Portugal After Leaving National Team

Cristiano Ronaldo Faces Suspension Following Departure from Portugal Squad

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has provisionally suspended Cristiano Ronaldo after he left the national team amid a conflict with manager Jorge Jesus. The decision was announced after the FPF's Non-Professional Section opened disciplinary proceedings on October 9, 2026.

This suspension remains in effect while the federation reviews the case to determine a final punishment for the 41-year-old forward. Portugal's next international matches are scheduled for November 14 and 17 against Denmark and Wales in the UEFA Nations League.

Dispute Over Playing Time Triggers Fallout

Ronaldo's suspension stems from a disagreement over his playing time in recent Nations League matches. The star player claimed that Jesus twice broke promises regarding his involvement in the games against Norway and Denmark. According to Ronaldo, the plan was for him to rest during those fixtures to manage his fitness, but Jesus later told him he would get 30 minutes against Norway.

Despite warming up in the second half of the Norway match, Ronaldo was not substituted on. Jesus explained the decision by pointing to the match situation, as Portugal was leading 2-1. This explanation did not satisfy Ronaldo, who subsequently held a meeting with Jesus, feeling the manager misrepresented their agreement during a press conference.

Ronaldo's Response and Apology

After leaving the team camp, Ronaldo apologized to his teammates and expressed willingness to accept any sanctions imposed by the FPF. He made clear that he is not retiring from international football and hopes to have one or more farewell matches.

"The Portuguese Football Federation must assess the consequences of my actions and punish me for them," Ronaldo said on social media. "I believe the penalty should not be reduced. I am not just an ordinary player; I am the captain of the team, and that is an aggravating factor. I have already apologized, but I know that actions have consequences. Anyone in the world of football, like me, knows that the rules are the same for everyone, regardless of individual standing."

Back in Action at Club Level

Ronaldo demonstrated his form remains strong by scoring the 980th goal of his career during Al-Nassr's 3-0 victory over Diriyah in the Saudi Pro League on Friday.
