2026-27 NBA Pacific Division Preview: Lakers, Suns, Clippers, Warriors, Kings Insights

Los Angeles Lakers

Strengths

With LeBron James now in Philadelphia, the spotlight turns to Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves. Dončić remains an MVP candidate, poised for another outstanding season. Reaves is coming off a career-best year, showing himself as a top offensive force. Together, they put immense pressure on defenses through driving, drawing fouls, and playmaking. Dončić’s passing is elite and balances his scoring perfectly. The Lakers played well offensively when Dončić and Reaves shared the floor without LeBron last season, and that should continue.

Walker Kessler, though costly, is expected to boost their defense with rim protection and rebounding. The addition of Sandro Mamukelashvili offers a versatile dribble-pass-shoot forward to relieve some creation duties from Dončić and Reaves. The wing rotation looks intriguing, especially with Cameron Carr, whose shooting and athleticism show promise once he builds strength.

Concerns

Defense is the biggest question. While Kessler helps, perimeter defense remains a work in progress despite additions like Matisse Thybulle and Ziaire Williams. How the team blends switching and traditional coverage will be interesting. They must improve defensively to reach their ceiling—being a bottom-10 defense would hinder progress.

The team lacks the athleticism of Western elite squads, which could challenge them in high-intensity matchups. Heavy offensive initiation rests on Dončić and Reaves, with others like Mamukelashvili helping but not fully alleviating the burden. The starting four spot is unsettled; using Mamukelashvili as a change-of-pace rather than a starter might work better. Spacing concerns arise if Jarred Vanderbilt starts, though he could boost defense. The role of a potential additional wing, possibly someone like Mr. Redick, remains to be seen.

Lineup to Watch

  • Quentin Grimes - Matisse Thybulle - Austin Reaves - Luka Dončić - Walker Kessler

This group features Reaves guarding the weakest opposing perimeter player while Dončić takes the nominal four spot. The trio of Grimes, Thybulle, and Kessler brings solid defense, rim protection, and event creation around the key duo.

Outlook

  • Best Case: No. 1 seed, possibly Dončić’s MVP year with a potent offense and improved defense.
  • Worst Case: Falling to the play-in tournament due to over-reliance on Dončić and Reaves or defensive struggles.

Phoenix Suns

Strengths

The Suns impressed defensively last season with aggressive pick-up points, ball pressure, off-ball activity, and double teams. Dillon Brooks leads the charge, bringing All-Defense level intensity. New contracts for Collin Gillespie and Jordan Goodwin add depth to their full-court pressure and bench chaos, alongside Ryan Dunn and Rasheer Fleming.

Devin Booker continues as a versatile offensive weapon, capable of both on- and off-ball roles. The center position looks promising with Oso Ighodaro and Khaman Maluach. Goodwin is a standout defender and capable shooter off the bench, making him a valuable contributor.

Concerns

The big question is whether opponents have adjusted to their aggressive style. Last year’s surprise element might be gone, so boxing out and switching by rivals could limit the Suns’ shot quality. The development of Jordan Ott in Year 2 is another point to watch.

Jalen Green can score in bursts and relieve pressure from Booker, but inconsistent decision-making and defensive concerns remain. Passing across the roster feels limited, potentially problematic against top-tier defenses. Mark Williams will miss much of the season recovering from shoulder surgery, impacting frontcourt depth.

Lineup to Watch

  • Collin Gillespie - Devin Booker - Dillon Brooks - Ryan Dunn - Khaman Maluach

This lineup combines shooting and creation with strong defensive pieces and rim protection. Their offensive rebounding adds value as well.

Outlook

  • Best Case: No. 6 seed with continued defensive toughness, internal growth, and Booker’s strong play.
  • Worst Case: Just outside the play-in due to better-prepared opponents and possible scoring dips.

Los Angeles Clippers

Strengths

Darius Garland takes the reins as lead playmaker, combining pull-up shooting, dribbling, and top-tier passing. Early preseason hints at a faster pace after several years of slower tempo.

The young talent excites, including Keaton Wagler, Yanic Konan Niederhäuser (who averaged 11 points and 8 rebounds in games with 20+ minutes), Kobe Sanders, and Jordan Miller. Defensive stalwart Kris Dunn brings energy, especially alongside Derrick Jones Jr. Acquiring Rui Hachimura adds reliable shooting.

Concerns

Health looms large. Brandon Ingram was acquired with a partially torn Achilles, and Garland's toe issues raise flags. Both are critical players. Brook Lopez remains the best rim protector but aging. Gradey Dick has struggled with three-point shooting, capping his impact despite good passing.

Rebounding was weak last season (23rd offensive, 25th defensive in league), and this roster lacks clear answers there. Improving or limiting damage on the boards is necessary.

Lineup to Watch

  • Darius Garland - Keaton Wagler - Jordan Miller - Kobe Sanders - Yanic Konan Niederhäuser

This lineup offers shooting, secondary creation, and spacing for Garland to operate pick-and-rolls effectively.

Outlook

  • Best Case: No. 10 seed if Garland and Ingram stay healthy and defense improves under coach Ty Lue.
  • Worst Case: Bottom of the Western Conference with injuries or overburdened young players.

Golden State Warriors

Strengths

Stephen Curry remains a transcendent player, capable of creating space and chaos on the floor. His connection with Draymond Green still produces unique two-man plays. The Warriors’ familiar half-court 'Split' action remains a staple.

Yaxel Lendeborg shows versatility and growing aggression. Bench contributors like Gary Payton II continue to provide valuable screening and playmaking.

Concerns

Health is a major concern; Curry and Green have missed significant time in recent seasons. Jimmy Butler recovers from ACL injury, and Kristaps Porziņģis battles illness. Younger players like Moses Moody have uncertain returns. The team’s success depends heavily on staying healthy.

Green’s offensive fit worries some, as his three-point shooting dipped below average last season despite increased attempts. The offense beyond Curry lacks consistent creators. Defensive rebounding was poor last year (24th in league), raising questions about how they will compensate.

Lineup to Watch

  • Stephen Curry - Kristaps Porziņģis - De'Anthony Melton - Yaxel Lendeborg - Draymond Green

Green often plays the five, opening offense in smaller lineups. The combination of Curry, Porziņģis, Melton, and Green showed a +33 net rating in limited minutes last season. Adding Lendeborg brings a versatile two-way presence.

Outlook

  • Best Case: Play-in tournament berth with healthy Curry and contributions from youngsters and role players. Returning Butler and Porziņģis would boost danger.
  • Worst Case: Missing play-in entirely due to injuries or veteran decline.

Sacramento Kings

Strengths

Darius Acuff impresses with creativity and confidence. His fearless playmaking inside and outside the arc makes him a rookie to watch closely. The young core includes Keegan Murray, an underrated wing defender with shooting potential, and Nique Clifford, a versatile wing who can fill gaps defensively and offensively.

The center duo of Maxime Raynaud and energetic backup Dylan Cardwell offers rim protection and energy. Emanuel Sharp brings tenacity. Veteran Domantas Sabonis provides half-court stability, excellent handoff plays, and screen-setting, key for supporting Acuff.

Adding Ben Simmons gives them a capable scorer and play initiator, although his future role is uncertain.

Concerns

Defensive consistency may hold them back despite individual talents. It could be one of the weaker defensive units. The team’s base defensive scheme remains unclear. Questions about the longevity of Sabonis and Zach LaVine linger, with potential trades possible.

Acuff’s rookie tendencies include risky plays. The guard stabilizer role is undefined; LaVine can handle scoring but may not be ideal as a primary initiator. Players like Clifford or Elfrid Payton might fill this void. Frontcourt rotations also raise questions.

Lineup to Watch

  • Darius Acuff - Nique Clifford - De'Andre Hunter - Keegan Murray - Domantas Sabonis

This lineup balances youth and veteran leadership, with room for Acuff’s creativity supported by secondary playmakers and defenders.

Outlook

  • Best Case: Narrowly missing play-in but showing clear progress. Rookie of the Year push for Acuff and meaningful strides from young players. Clearing salary space via trades for Sabonis, LaVine, or Malik Monk to focus on rebuild.
  • Worst Case: Struggling near the bottom of the West with inefficient offense and defensive lapses. Uncertainty around coaching and team direction.
