WWE Officials Interpret Turki Alalshikh's Canelo Alvarez Remark as a Subtle Critique of TKO

WWE Considers Safety Issues Before Crown Jewel Event in Saudi Arabia

With the Crown Jewel pay-per-view event only weeks away, WWE leaders are carefully evaluating their plans due to growing safety concerns in Saudi Arabia. This partnership has been WWE's most profitable venture to date but hasn't been without its complications.

The current tense climate in the Middle East has sparked unease within WWE about proceeding with the upcoming show.

Turki Alalshikh’s Comment Viewed as a Message to WWE and TKO

According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, many within WWE believe that comments made recently by Turki Alalshikh regarding boxer Canelo Alvarez were indirectly aimed at WWE and its parent company, TKO Group Holdings. Internal discussions reveal uncertainty about traveling to Saudi Arabia amid these developments.

Meltzer noted that the ultimate decision on whether to hold the event will rest with TKO President Ari Emanuel, who is expected to consider input from Nick Khan and other senior executives.

Meltzer said: "In WWE, when that tweet came out, I mean they knew it was a message for them too… This is obviously going to be Ari Emanuel's decision. This is way over Nick Khan's head. I'm sure it won't be without Nick Khan's input."

Alalshikh’s Support for Canelo Amid Regional Tensions

Just days ago, Turki Alalshikh took to X (formerly Twitter) to address concerns surrounding the potential cancellation of the Canelo Alvarez vs. Christian Mbilli fight due to instability in Saudi Arabia.

He confirmed the bout would proceed as planned and praised Canelo for his loyalty during challenging times for Saudi Arabia’s leadership.

Alalshikh posted: "Canelo reached out and told me he'll still fight in Riyadh this October, no matter what happens. He fears nothing. My country is home to the two Holy Mosques, land of peace, safety, rich civilisation, deep history, and kind-hearted people. Thank you to everyone who checked in and showed support. Hard times reveal true friends."

Promotions and Past Controversies

It may not be a coincidence that WWE began airing promotional clips for Crown Jewel during Monday Night RAW shortly after Alalshikh’s pointed remarks.

This is not the first time WWE has faced challenges linked to its Saudi Arabia relationship. In 2018, amidst widespread corporate pullouts over human rights concerns, WWE went ahead with the Crown Jewel event despite intense backlash. Vince McMahon attempted to shift focus by bringing Hulk Hogan back after his Hall of Fame removal.

For now, WWE’s promotion of the event does not guarantee it will happen. TKO officials continue to assess the evolving situation closely.
