UFC Vegas 124 Features New Heavyweight Main Event: Waldo Cortes-Acosta vs Johnny Walker
New Headliner Announced for UFC Vegas 124
Following Sean Brady's injury withdrawal from his scheduled fight against Gabriel Bonfim, the UFC quickly arranged a fresh main event for UFC Vegas 124 set for November 7. In a heavyweight clash, Waldo Cortes-Acosta will face off against Johnny Walker. This matchup has been confirmed by multiple sources to Heavy.com after initial reports by Brazilian MMA journalist Laerte Viana.
Fighter Rankings and Backgrounds
Cortes-Acosta currently holds the sixth position in the UFC Media rankings and eighth in the UFC Meta rankings. His opponent, Walker, is ranked twelfth in the Meta rankings. Despite the short notice, Cortes-Acosta understands that a loss is not an option.
The Dominican Republic native entered the UFC in 2022 via the Contender Series. Early expectations had him as a future top-10 fighter, but after a unanimous decision loss to Marcos Rogério de Lima in his third UFC bout, momentum slowed. He then secured five straight wins including victories over Serghei Spivac and Ryan Spann, which led to a fight against highly ranked Sergei Pavlovich. Pavlovich won that match by unanimous decision.
Since then, Cortes-Acosta went on a finishing streak by defeating Ante Delija, Shamil Gaziev, and Derrick Lewis within just 90 days. These wins earned him a shot against Alexander Volkov earlier this year, where Volkov managed to control the fight across three rounds. Recently, Cortes-Acosta lost again in a lackluster performance against Curtis Blaydes. He now aims to end his two-fight losing streak against Walker.
Johnny Walker’s Move to Heavyweight
Walker sees this bout as a major chance to break into the division's top 8 in only his second heavyweight fight. Formerly a light-heavyweight contender, he fought in that division from 2018 through early 2026. Once touted as a rising star and potential challenger to Jon Jones, Walker started strong with three first-round UFC wins. However, his form dipped, winning only one of his following five fights.
Between 2022 and 2023, Walker bounced back with a three-fight winning streak, pushing him back toward title contention. Unfortunately, knockout losses to Magomed Ankalaev and Volkan Oezdemir in 2024 stalled his rise. After rebounding with a win over Zhang Mingyang, Walker expressed interest in moving up to heavyweight but initially took on Dominick Reyes at light-heavyweight, losing by split decision.
Walker then committed to the heavyweight division, knocking out Mick Parkin in the first round earlier this month. Now facing Cortes-Acosta, a victory would likely place him in the heavyweight top 8.
