South Africa Loses Ottneil Baartman for Australia ODIs, Duan Jansen Steps In

South Africa’s build-up to their ODI series against Australia has taken an early hit, with seamer Ottneil Baartman ruled out through injury and replaced by the rising left-armer Duan Jansen.

Cricket South Africa confirmed on Sunday that Baartman has suffered a left hamstring injury, ending his hopes of featuring in the marquee home series. It’s a cruel interruption for a bowler who has spent the past year edging his way into the national conversation.

Baartman was not involved in South Africa’s ongoing ODI series against Namibia – their first 50-over assignment since the tour of India in November-December last year – but he had been part of that India trip and last pulled on the national colours in the New Zealand T20Is in March.

He then headed to the United States for Major League Cricket in June and July, before returning to domestic duty this week for Dolphins in the CSA 4-Day Series Division 1 against Titans. That comeback lasted just five overs with the ball in Titans’ only innings. He did not appear with the bat in Dolphins’ second innings, and the alarm bells rang. CSA’s medical update soon followed, confirming the hamstring setback and ruling him out of the Australia series.

Into that gap steps Duan Jansen, another left-arm quick but at a very different stage of his career.

The 23-year-old has been fast-tracked through a busy winter. He impressed in the Namibia T20I tri-series, then made his ODI debut in the ongoing series in Windhoek and wasted no time announcing himself: 4 for 31 in the second one-dayer, a performance that underlined why the selectors see him as more than just a short-term patch. With South Africa already 2-0 up in the three-match contest, Jansen was one of three changes for the final fixture, a sign of both trust and experimentation as the coaching staff stretch their options.

He will officially link up with the main squad on September 19, when the group assembles in Durban to prepare for Australia.

The Baartman blow lands in a pace unit already carrying scars. Kagiso Rabada remains sidelined as he continues his own recovery from a hamstring injury, leaving South Africa without their premier quick and one of their newer seam options at the same time.

The selectors have responded by turning back to Gerald Coetzee, who has not played an ODI since the 2023 World Cup but brings raw pace and hostility that can rattle any batting line-up. Anrich Nortje, still working his way back from his own long-term issues, was not considered, so the fast-bowling group now leans on a blend of youth and experience.

Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, Kwena Maphaka and Corbin Bosch round out the pace attack. It is a unit rich in variety – left-arm angle from the Jansens, hit-the-deck aggression from Coetzee, control from Ngidi, youthful fire from Maphaka, and Bosch’s all-round skills – but it will be tested by an Australian side that relishes hard, fast South African pitches.

For Baartman, the task shifts from opportunity to recovery. For Duan Jansen, the door has opened a little earlier than expected. How he walks through it against Australia may say plenty about South Africa’s fast-bowling pecking order for the seasons to come.
