Asian Games Cricket Quarterfinals Canceled by Rain, India and Pakistan Advance Without Playing

Rain Cancels Asian Games Cricket Quarterfinals, India and Pakistan Move Forward

The men's cricket quarterfinals at the Asian Games 2026 in Nagoya were washed out due to heavy rain and soggy outfields, allowing India and Pakistan to reach the semifinals without playing a single ball.

Pakistan's quarterfinal against Hong Kong was called off first, with the higher T20I ranking giving them passage to the semis. Soon after, persistent rain forced the abandonment of India's match against Afghanistan about 16 minutes before the toss was scheduled. Since the seeding is based on the ICC T20I rankings as of July 23, 2026, India progressed over Afghanistan.

Players and Fans Voice Disappointment

Afghanistan's Mohammad Akram Zazai expressed frustration, saying his team was ready and eager to play. He noted their familiarity with the venue, having already played twice there, and wished that even a few overs could have been completed to give his team a chance.

"We are here for the match but unfortunately it rained. We would have been happy to play here with India - our players are in form," Zazai said."We just wanted to play the match so that there was a chance."

Supporters took to social media to criticize the event organizers for poor ground management and inadequate preparations.

  • @Ajmalzadran18: Called the organizers absolutely incompetent for lacking equipment to dry the field despite the year being 2026.
  • @Crictologist: Highlighted that both Afghanistan and Hong Kong were eliminated without playing their quarterfinal matches, blaming rain for ruining the opportunity.
  • @Rajiv1841: Questioned the timing of the abandonment, noting the game was canceled nearly 40 minutes before the scheduled start.
  • @Amitsinha4444: Suggested the host country had little knowledge of cricket and failed to prepare the grounds properly, referencing poor conditions from earlier matches.
  • @doc_hormone: Wondered what was going on with the cricket tournament as matches kept getting abandoned.

Organizers Criticized for Lack of Preparation Amid Known Weather Risks

While rain is unpredictable, many feel the hosts should have anticipated the weather forecast and arranged adequate covers, drying equipment, or super soakers to make the pitch playable. Instead, no such measures were in place, leaving the tournament vulnerable to delays and cancellations.

A semifinal reached without a single delivery bowled leaves a hollow feeling. The Asian Games cricket event deserves more thorough planning to ensure the sport’s future remains secure in these games.
