Shubman Gill's Leadership Record Across All Cricket Formats

Shubman Gill's Captaincy Journey in International Cricket and IPL

India is currently engaged in a three-match ODI series against England, providing an opportune moment to review Shubman Gill's leadership across different formats of cricket. Since taking on the role of Test captain in 2025, Gill has led India through some memorable moments, including leveling the series during the England tour and victories over West Indies, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka.

One highlight was India's 165-run triumph in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, which marked Gill's sixth win in 10 Tests as captain. The second Test, however, ended in a draw with Sri Lanka fighting hard to avoid defeat on the final day, causing his win percentage to dip slightly.

At just 26 years old, Gill has captained India in Tests, ODIs, T20Is, and also leads the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Under his stewardship, the Titans have reached the playoffs in both 2025 and 2026 seasons.

His first ODI series victory came against Afghanistan at home in June 2026, leading India to three straight wins. Later that year, during the series against England, India won the opener but dropped the next two matches.

Test Captaincy Record

Named Test captain before the 2025 England tour after the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Gill faced an early challenge as India drew the five-Test series 2-2. He then led India to their first Test series win under his captaincy at home against the West Indies.

Following that, India achieved an overseas Test series win against Afghanistan in June 2026 and faced Sri Lanka in a two-Test series. The Galle Test showcased a commanding performance: India scored 462 in their first innings, bowled out Sri Lanka for 284, and set a target of 372 by declaring at 193/9. Sri Lanka were dismissed for 206, handing India a 165-run victory.

This win pushed Gill’s tally to six wins in 10 Tests, bringing his win ratio to 60%. India currently lead the ongoing Sri Lanka series 1-0, though the drawn match in Colombo lowered his overall win percentage.
