India Secures Men's Cricket Gold at 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou

India Claims Men's Cricket Gold at 2023 Asian Games

Led by captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, India won the men's cricket gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games held in Hangzhou. The team entered the tournament directly at the quarterfinal stage and demonstrated strong performances throughout.

Path to the Gold Medal

India comfortably defeated Nepal in the quarterfinals by 23 runs, securing a place in the semifinals. Their momentum continued as they convincingly overcame Bangladesh in the semifinal match.

The final against Afghanistan was cut short due to persistent rain. Afghanistan had reached 112 for 5 in 18.2 overs before play was halted. With no possible result, officials used the tournament's seeding rule to award the gold medal to India as the higher-ranked team before the final.

Looking Ahead: Asian Games 2026

As defending champions, India enters the 2026 Asian Games, hosted across Aichi and Nagoya, with high expectations but also added pressure. Both India and Pakistan have been granted direct entry to the quarterfinals.

A recent warm-up match against hosts Japan showed signs of vulnerability, with India narrowly winning by just two runs in a rain-shortened five-over game. Shreyas Iyer's 16 runs stood out as Japan's bowlers challenged the Indian batting order.
