Sergio Perez Extends Cadillac F1 Contract Through 2029
Sergio Perez Commits to Cadillac Until 2029
Sergio Perez has agreed to extend his contract with Cadillac Formula 1 Team, securing his place with the US-backed squad until at least 2029. The announcement comes just before Perez's home race in Mexico City.
From Red Bull to Cadillac: A New Chapter
Perez joined Cadillac as they entered Formula 1 in 2026 after parting ways with Red Bull, which left him without a seat last season. Despite a mixed debut year with the new team, the 36-year-old Mexican driver is showing solid form this season, matching and sometimes surpassing the performance of his experienced teammate, Valtteri Bottas.
Strong Bonds Behind the Scenes
Right from the start, Perez wanted to be deeply involved in the team's development. This hands-on approach helped him build a close relationship with team CEO Dan Towriss and General Motors chief Mark Reuss. Encouraged by Cadillac’s long-term vision, Perez decided to commit for at least three more seasons.
"Joining Cadillac Formula 1 Team from day one was a project I truly believed in, and extending my commitment feels like a natural continuation of this chapter," said Perez. "Building a Formula 1 team from the ground up takes time, relentless work and patience, but the progress we are making together is incredibly rewarding. There is still a lot of work ahead of us and I am fully committed for the next three years."
"I want to thank Dan, Mark, and everyone at TWG Motorsports and General Motors for the opportunity to build on what we have started together. To every member of this special team, at the track, in the US, the UK, and our fans, thank you for your support and trust. I won’t let you down. Let’s keep pushing."
Leadership Praised by Team Executives
Mark Reuss, GM CEO, and Dan Towriss emphasized Perez's value to the team. Towriss said:
"Building a competitive team in F1 is a long-term journey, and securing Checo’s talent and leadership gives us the continuity and commitment we need to build on the strong foundation established in our first year. Together, we are focused on the next phase of our journey, pushing the team forward and making progress up the grid."
Milestone and Future Teammate Uncertainty
This contract news coincides with Perez preparing for his 300th Grand Prix start during the Mexico City race weekend. To celebrate, he will perform a demonstration run on the streets of the Mexican capital. Perez is a six-time Grand Prix winner, having achieved victories with Racing Point and Red Bull before joining Cadillac.
The identity of Perez’s teammate in 2027 remains unclear. Bottas had signed what was thought to be a multi-year deal but struggled this season. Cadillac is reviewing its options carefully.
While some of Bottas's difficulties are linked to Cadillac's evolving car and production challenges, the Finnish driver might still return next year. On the other hand, American test driver Colton Herta has been groomed for an F1 debut and is among the candidates for the vacant seat.
