Sean Brady Details Reason for Withdrawing from UFC Vegas 124 Main Event
Sean Brady Withdraws from UFC Vegas 124 Main Event
Sean Brady, a top contender in the UFC welterweight division, revealed the reason behind his decision to pull out of his scheduled main event fight against Gabriel Bonfim at UFC Vegas 124.
The matchup was set to headline next Saturday’s event, but with less than a week remaining, Brady confirmed he will not compete. This late withdrawal puts the UFC in a tough spot, as finding a replacement fighter on short notice seems unlikely. Consequently, Bonfim might miss out on the chance to fight at the event altogether.
Health Issues Forced Brady to Pull Out
Speaking on The BradyBagz Show, Brady described how his knee swelled after training and became so painful he struggled to walk by nightfall. By Wednesday morning, he suspected an infection rather than bursitis, a condition he has experienced before. He explained:
"My knee was a little bit swollen after training. By nine o’clock at night, I couldn’t walk. Wednesday morning, I already knew because I’ve been in this situation before. I’ve dealt with bursitis and other stuff and I knew this wasn’t bursitis. I knew it was an infection… I could barely walk."
Brady identified the problem as a staph infection, which left him unable to compete. Being anything less than fully healthy, he decided to withdraw from the bout that could have propelled him further into the UFC welterweight elite.
Apologizing to Gabriel Bonfim
Brady expressed regret for letting down Bonfim, who had completed an entire training camp preparing for the fight. He empathized with the frustration of last-minute cancellations, sharing his own experiences of uncertainty when opponents pull out close to fight day:
"I feel for Bonfim too. It sucks, man. I’ve been there where guys pull out, you’re two weeks out and then you don’t know if you’re fighting, you’re looking for a new opponent. I know he was putting in the training camp, trust me, and that’s what sucks. I did a ten-week training camp for this."
What's Next for Sean Brady?
Now focused on recovering fully from the infection, Brady will need time to regain full health before the UFC can schedule his return to the Octagon. His withdrawal is a setback both for himself and for Bonfim, who must wait for another opportunity to climb the welterweight ranks.
