Rybakina Withdraws From Billie Jean King Cup After Gruelling Month

Elena Rybakina has scaled the summit of the sport. She will not, however, be there for Kazakhstan when the Billie Jean King Cup Finals begin in Shenzhen next week.

The newly crowned world number one and reigning US Open champion confirmed on Friday that she will skip the event, calling time on a physically punishing stretch that ended with her third Grand Slam title.

“I have to announce that I won't be able to participate in Billie Jean King Cup this year,” Rybakina wrote on Instagram. “Am very sad to miss Shenzhen, such a nice place with an amazing crowd.”

The decision lands just days after one of the most commanding performances of her career. In New York, the 27-year-old tore through the draw and dismantled two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka in the final, seizing the trophy and the top ranking in one sweeping statement.

Her US Open run came with an extra layer of jeopardy. An ankle injury had threatened to derail her campaign before a ball was struck. Instead, she managed the problem, played through the discomfort and left Flushing Meadows with the title, adding it to the Australian Open crown she won in January and her 2022 Wimbledon breakthrough.

The cost of that push is now clear.

“Last month has been tough for my body and I will need to recover and be at my best to compete again,” she added. “I wish girls good luck.”

For Kazakhstan, it is a significant blow. Rybakina has been the face and driving force of the nation’s rise on the women’s side, a player capable of tilting any tie on her own. Without her, the team must confront a demanding quarter-final against Spain on September 23 with a very different complexion.

Shenzhen, hosting the Finals from September 22 to 27, will still boast a strong field and a partisan crowd, but it will be missing the sport’s newest standard-bearer. Italy arrive as the two-time defending champions, the benchmark for everyone else in a week that often turns into a test of depth as much as star power.

Rybakina, meanwhile, steps away to protect the body that has carried her to the top. The trophies are piling up. The calendar is unforgiving. The world number one has made her choice.
