Why Novak Djokovic vs. Daniil Medvedev Ended with a Default at the China Open

Djokovic Advances After Medvedev's Default in Beijing Semifinal

The semifinal match between Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev at the China Open ended unexpectedly when Medvedev was defaulted while trailing 7-5, 5-3. The incident happened after Medvedev missed reaching a winning shot from Djokovic, causing the ball to bounce off the back wall. Frustrated, Medvedev hit the rebounding ball into the stands, where it struck a spectator in the front row.

This action immediately ended Medvedev's run in Beijing and gave Djokovic a spot in the final.

Rules Behind Medvedev's Default

The ATP rules prohibit players from hitting a ball recklessly or dangerously. Even if the player does not intend harm, hitting the ball carelessly that results in contact with a spectator, official, or anyone around the court can lead to a default.

In Medvedev's case, the ball struck a spectator’s face after he swatted it in frustration. Stadium staff quickly attended to the person and escorted them away. Since intent is not required for disqualification, tournament officials had to act, and chair umpire Mohamed Lahyani confirmed the default.

Medvedev lost the match despite being only two games from victory and forfeited all ranking points and prize money earned during the tournament.

Parallels to Djokovic's 2020 US Open Default

This controversial ending reminded many of Djokovic's own disqualification at the 2020 US Open. Back then, Djokovic accidentally hit a line judge in the throat with a ball he struck after losing a game. Although unintentional, the ball caused the official to collapse, leading to his removal from the event after discussions among officials.

Both incidents highlight the strict enforcement of rules regarding dangerous or reckless ball striking, regardless of intention.
