Manchester City Draw 1-1 with PSG as Tara Elimbi Gilbert Denies Late Win
Manchester City Held to Draw by PSG in Women's Champions League
Manchester City were unable to secure a win in their latest Women’s Champions League fixture, drawing 1-1 with Paris Saint-Germain at the Joie Stadium. Tara Elimbi Gilbert’s goal in the 88th minute cancelled out a late penalty by Khadija Shaw, extending City's run without a victory in this season’s European competition.
Late Drama Seals the Draw
Jamaican forward Khadija Shaw seemed to have clinched the three points for the hosts after successfully converting a penalty awarded due to a foul by Griedge Mbock Bathy. Yet, PSG struck back quickly on a counter-attack, with Gilbert calmly finishing past goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita just two minutes before full time, ensuring the visitors left with a point.
PSG's Defensive Resilience Frustrates City
The game itself was tense but lacked clear-cut chances for much of the match. PSG focused on maintaining a tight defense and managed to frustrate City’s attacks, while offering little offensive threat themselves.
During the first half, City created better opportunities, with Shaw firing wide from outside the box and missing several headers from set pieces. After the break, PSG's captain Sakina Karchaoui nearly scored with a curling free-kick, narrowly going over the bar. Shaw also tested goalkeeper Oliwia Peda with a powerful shot saved for a corner and later missed a header from a cross.
Manager Reflects on Performance Despite Late Equalizer
City remain unbeaten across all competitions this season but have now drawn all three group stage matches in the Champions League. Coach Andree Jeglertz expressed mixed feelings about the result to BBC Two, saying,
"It’s mixed feelings. I think the performance is very good, we play a great game, we create scoring chances, we control the game in general all game. There are some parts in the first half when they are a little bit better than us. But of course you end up conceding a goal at the end and that sticks with you a little bit. That’s a disappointment but overall what we are performing today shows what level we have."
Qualification Hopes Remain Strong
With three points from the league phase so far, City still need results in their remaining matches to advance. Their upcoming fixtures against Inter Milan, BK Häcken, and Austria Wien offer good chances to secure wins and move into the knockout rounds. Turning their solid performances into victories will be key to progress.
