Lisandro Martinez Explains Harsh Criticism of Man Utd Board but Stands Firm Without Apology
Martinez Clarifies His Comments on Manchester United Leadership
Following Manchester United's 2-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, Lisandro Martinez expressed his frustration with the club's board and sporting director Jason Wilcox. The Argentine defender blamed anger and disappointment for his strong words but declined to apologize directly to the club’s hierarchy.
Post-Match Reaction and Social Media Clarification
The defeat sparked a sharp reaction from Martinez, who criticized the transfer decisions and lack of support for manager Michael Carrick during the summer window. Rumors suggest the club may take disciplinary action against the centre-back. To address the situation, Martinez posted a 271-word statement on Instagram explaining his feelings, yet he did not issue a formal apology to those he criticized.
His explanation came amid a difficult period for the Red Devils, who have lost five out of nine matches this season. Tensions within the squad were also evident when teammate Amad Diallo shared a cryptic message calling the situation a "f***ing disgrace" on social media, adding to the unrest at Old Trafford.
Anger Fueled by Passion and Desire to Win
"After the match, I spoke out of anger and frustration at not getting the result we all wanted," Martinez wrote. "Those who know me know how I live football, with passion, commitment and a huge desire to win."
The former Ajax player emphasized his commitment to the club’s legacy and ambition, stating that his comments stem from wanting Manchester United to compete for top honors. He called for higher standards across the club, including himself, highlighting the responsibility tied to wearing the team shirt.
Martinez added, "When I talk about wanting more, I’m talking about the ambition we must all have as part of this club to keep growing, to become stronger and to have everything we need to compete at the highest level." He acknowledged that players bear primary responsibility and said he is ready to lead by example.
Backing Carrick Amid Club Turmoil
Despite criticism of the board, Martinez voiced strong support for manager Michael Carrick. He believes constant managerial changes won’t help the team improve. In his follow-up message, Martinez reaffirmed his faith in the coaching staff and teammates, urging everyone to work together with ambition and commitment to restore United’s status at the top.
"I believe in my teammates, our manager and everyone working to help this club move forward," Martinez said. "My goal has been the same since day one, to win, to compete at the highest level and to give everything I have for this badge."
Upcoming Challenges and Future Uncertainty
The focus now shifts to a tough Premier League trip to face Leeds United at Elland Road. Carrick faces a defensive dilemma with Luke Shaw, Patrick Dorgu, and Noussair Mazraoui unavailable. Matthijs de Ligt recently returned to the bench after injury, making Martinez’s role in defense even more crucial despite the off-field distractions.
Looking ahead, Martinez’s contract situation remains unsettled. His deal expires at the end of June, with Manchester United holding an option to extend by one year. The club is expected to use this option to avoid losing the £57 million World Cup winner on a free transfer next summer.
