Lewis Hamilton Eyes F1 Racing into the 2030s, Claims He's 'Built Differently'
Lewis Hamilton Talks Longevity and New African Grand Prix
Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton insists he is different when discussing the possibility of continuing his career long enough to race at the upcoming African Grand Prix in Rwanda. F1 recently signed a decade-long agreement with Rwanda to host a new race near Kigali, expected to debut in the early 2030s. Hamilton, who has campaigned for the return of F1 to Africa, was asked about the new contract and joked that he'd need to extend his career to compete there.
Confidence in His Reaction Times
Hamilton declared, "You've never had anyone like me here in the last 10 years. I feel that I'm built differently." He acknowledged that aging brings challenges he can't yet predict but pointed out how assumptions about declining reaction times don’t always hold true. "Did you see my reaction in the last race? My reaction's faster than some of the youngest people here," he said. He credits various tools to keep his mind sharp and maintains a strong willingness to sacrifice for his craft.
"I can't say in four years whether I want to continue, but I love what I’m doing now. I'm still all in and will be for the foreseeable future. Whether I can compete at 44 with a 20-year-old, who knows? At 41, I can compete with a 20-year-old. Time will tell if I’m here in the 30s."
He emphasized he doesn't want to overstay if his performance drops, mentioning last year's doubts about his pace that he believes he has disproven so far.
Current Season and Future Plans
Currently third in the driver standings and just one point behind George Russell for second place, Hamilton says the battle for second isn't his main focus. "Winning the championship is the only thing anybody really cares about," he remarked. His priority is helping Ferrari secure second in the constructors' championship after finishing fourth last year.
He views the remaining five races as an opportunity to test and prepare for the 2027 car, collaborating with the team's head of aerodynamics and focusing on areas like vehicle dynamics and chassis improvements.
