Black Caps Strengthen Squad with Milne and Bracewell for India T20s

New Zealand have named a near full-strength, pace-heavy squad to face India at home, recalling Adam Milne and Michael Bracewell for a marquee T20 series that will test both depth and ambition against the reigning world champions.

Mitchell Santner leads a 16-man group that bristles with fast-bowling options and power at the top, but also carries a couple of hard-edged selection calls on some World Cup stalwarts.

Allen–Seifert axis set to fire

At the top of the order, Finn Allen will be joined by Tim Seifert, whose stock has rarely been higher. Seifert has just paraded his form on both sides of the world, driving Manchester Super Giants to the title in England’s “The Hundred” and walking away as player of the tournament, before sealing a Big Bash move to the Sydney Sixers.

That partnership signals intent. New Zealand want to go hard in the powerplay, and they’ve picked two men who live in the fast lane.

Milne headlines stacked seam attack

The most striking feature of the squad sits with the quicks. Milne’s name is back on a New Zealand teamsheet, a notable return for the 34-year-old after injury cruelly cut short his involvement before this year’s World Cup. He was named in the initial 15-man squad for that tournament, only to be ruled out before a ball was bowled.

He rejoins a seven-strong pace core that includes Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes and Nathan Smith. It is an armoury built for home conditions and for sustained hostility over a long, high-intensity summer.

Ben Sears, another rapid option, remains unavailable as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury.

Bracewell back, McConchie squeezed out

In the allrounder stakes, Bracewell’s return is just as significant. Forced out of the World Cup squad by injury, the off-spinning allrounder now walks straight back into the Black Caps setup and, in doing so, closes the door on Cole McConchie.

McConchie impressed as an injury replacement in India and Sri Lanka, offering control with the ball and handy runs. He has still been edged aside, a blunt reminder of how ruthless selection becomes when the first-choice names are fit.

Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips round out a multi-skilled middle order, with Mark Chapman and Devon Conway adding left-handed balance and class.

Ravindra ruled out, Jacobs steps in

One name missing from the list stands out. Rachin Ravindra, New Zealand’s breakout star of the World Cup, has not been named after suffering a freak shoulder injury while on commercial duties last week. New Zealand hope he will recover in time for the five-match one-day international series starting at the beginning of November, but for now they must plan without him.

His absence opens the door for Bevon Jacobs, one of three players overlooked for World Cup selection who now find themselves back in the frame. Jacobs comes in alongside seamers Foulkes and Smith, giving the selectors fresh options as they juggle form, fitness and a heavy calendar.

Big calls on Sodhi and Neesham

There is no place for Ish Sodhi or Jimmy Neesham, both part of the World Cup travelling party. Their omission underlines the shift in balance: more pace, more batting depth through allrounders, and a willingness to rotate proven campaigners out of the firing line.

Head coach Rob Walter made the priorities clear. India at home, in front of packed crowds, is a stage New Zealand intend to own.

“India is a quality team and a challenging opposition, so to take them on in our own conditions in front of Kiwi fans is really exciting,” Walter said. “We hear most of the games are going to be sold out and it should make for some incredible occasions.

“We’ve got a near full-strength squad that covers all bases and I’m excited to see how we compete against the current T20 world champions.

“Our priority is winning games and putting the best team on the park, but we also have to keep in mind the volume of cricket in the coming months.

“We’re very fortunate with the depth that we’ve got to call upon, so we’ll look to use all 16 squad members throughout the series as we manage workloads.”

That last line tells its own story. This is not just about one series. It is about stress-testing a group that will carry New Zealand through a relentless run of cricket.

India will bring the noise. The Black Caps, armed with pace, power and a point to prove, now have to match it.
