Anderson Weighs in on Bruno Fernandes vs Paul Scholes Comparison at Manchester United

Anderson Reflects on Fernandes and Scholes at Manchester United

Bruno Fernandes has grown into a key figure for Manchester United, orchestrating play from midfield. But can the Portuguese star be compared to club legend Paul Scholes? Former Red Devils midfielder Anderson, who played alongside Scholes, shared his views with GOAL.

Scholes’ Legendary Career at Old Trafford

Making his senior debut in 1993, Paul Scholes rose through the ranks alongside icons like David Beckham and Gary Neville. His entire playing career unfolded at the Theatre of Dreams, where he appeared 718 times under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Scholes helped United dominate domestically and won two Champions League titles, including the famous treble-winning season of 1998-99. With 155 goals to his name, Scholes was known for his late runs into the box and precise passing, setting up numerous chances for teammates.

Fernandes’ Impact in Modern Times

Fernandes has mirrored some of these achievements, especially last season when he set a Premier League record with 21 assists in one campaign. Across all competitions, he has netted 111 goals in 334 games for United, only falling short of double-digit goals once since joining.

The Portuguese midfielder has been named Player of the Year five times by the club and earned the PFA Player of the Year award in the 2025-26 season. Now captain, Fernandes is seen as a vital presence and is expected to sign a new contract soon.

Are Fernandes and Scholes Comparable?

When asked if Fernandes reaches Scholes’ level, Anderson offered insight. Speaking with BetVictor Online Casino and GOAL, he said:

“I think Bruno Fernandes is amazing, has amazing qualities, amazing player. He’s a top player now, but Scholes is a different level. He’s a completely different level.
I think Scholes is close to the most top players in midfield on the planet. I think Xavi, Iniesta. Bruno I put closer to Lampard, Gerrard, Makelele, Essien, and Kroos.
They play in different positions. Scholes starts centrally but drops back, blending defense and attack. Fernandes is more focused on midfield and attack, similar to when Rooney played. Both are completely different, but Scholes is Scholes. Scholes is a different planet.
I played eight years with him. Scholes isn’t just impressive during matches, but also in training. Sometimes it made me frustrated because I’d run everywhere and then Scholes would get the ball for 10 minutes and score. That’s Scholes—an amazing player and person.”

Legacy and Expectations

Scholes retired in 2013 alongside Ferguson, leaving a void that United have struggled to fill, enduring a 13-year wait without a Premier League title. Fernandes shoulders much of the responsibility to help restore the club's glory.

While Fernandes has done much to support the team, it remains to be seen if he can join the elite group of English champions that includes Scholes.
