Will Young Cleared for Warwickshire's Title Decider

Warwickshire will have Will Young back at the top of the order for their County Championship title shootout next week, after an unexpected visa issue briefly threatened to derail the New Zealander’s late-season stint.

The 33-year-old Test opener, re-signed in June to cover the Bears’ final six Championship fixtures from August, had played the first four without fuss. Then the call came.

On the morning of Warwickshire’s match against Essex at Chelmsford, just 10 minutes before the scheduled start, the club were informed by the England and Wales Cricket Board that Young was unavailable due to a visa problem. The same issue also hit his New Zealand team-mate Henry Nicholls, who is on a parallel six-game deal with Somerset.

Warwickshire later summed it up in a brief statement: “Will Young was unavailable for selection due to an outstanding visa matter that has since been resolved between his agent and the ECB.”

The contrast with Nicholls’ situation was stark. Somerset received clearance for their man the night before. Warwickshire’s confirmation landed at 10:20 BST – too late to rip up a team sheet, reshuffle the order and throw Young straight back into the XI.

By then, the Bears had already turned to Zen Malik. Thrust into the opener’s role, he responded with a composed second-innings half-century, a key contribution in a ruthless two-day victory that backed up another two-day win the previous round.

“We had a tough few days,” first-team coach Ian Westwood told BBC Radio WM. “Will got a call saying that he had a problem with his visa. The application is normally pretty standard and it had gone in via his agent. But it hadn’t come back and we were in a race against time. Everyone at the club did everything they could.

“I believe Somerset might have been in the same boat and theirs came though the night before. Ours came though at 20 past 10, which was a bit too late. It was too late to play in this game but he’s available for next week.”

The relief is obvious. After a gruelling two-and-a-half-week road swing that delivered three straight wins over Hampshire, Glamorgan and Essex, Warwickshire now head back to Edgbaston with momentum, a title on the line and their overseas opener cleared to play.

Leicestershire, fighting to avoid relegation, arrive on 24 September. The stakes are heavy at both ends of the table. Young is back in the frame, Malik has just made a statement at the top, and Westwood suddenly has a welcome selection dilemma for the biggest game of Warwickshire’s season.
