Uros Medic Suggests Islam Makhachev Should Consider Retirement After UFC Dominance
Uros Medic Thinks Islam Makhachev Has Done It All in the UFC
Over the past decade, Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev have ruled the UFC lightweight scene. Khabib was known for his Sambo wrestling style, relentless takedowns, and ground control, but Makhachev has taken that to a new level. With four lightweight title defenses, the longest winning streak in UFC lightweight history at 17 wins, plus a second UFC title at 170 pounds, Makhachev has collected almost every achievement possible.
Medic Tired of Watching Makhachev's Dominance
On the Believe You Me podcast, Serbian welterweight Uros Medic expressed an unusual feeling about Makhachev's reign. He said, "I'm going to be honest with you: I'm a little tired of watching Islam Makhachev winning at the top. I'm like, Come on, go rest, go relax. You're the best, bro."
Medic suggested that Makhachev has ticked all the boxes and should think about retiring while on top. He added, "You've proved everything. I'm not afraid to say he is the best in the division right now. He is the champion. There's no doubt about it. But if you're talking or considering retirement, bro, get out. You've already accomplished everything."
Makhachev's Future and Upcoming Fights
Rumors indicate that Makhachev might be nearing the end of his UFC career, as he hinted his next few fights could be his last. He aims to challenge the best competition, expected to face the winner between Carlos Prates and Michael Morales at UFC 336 for the interim 170-pound title.
Originally, Makhachev planned to defend his undisputed title in January but withdrew from talks, seeking a more worthy opponent. This move sparked criticism from fans and UFC president Dana White, though Makhachev seems unfazed by the backlash.
Medic Believes Makhachev Deserves to Move On
Medic praised both Makhachev and Nurmagomedov for their huge impact on MMA and thinks Makhachev has earned the chance to explore other paths. He said, "Go do your thing, bro. Be a businessman, be a politician, he can be anything. He is a smart fellow. So we're probably going to see him for another year, maybe? Another one or two fights, and that's amazing."
He concluded with respect for their legacy and curiosity about the future: "He has made a statement in this division that will probably be a long time before someone comes around and does what him and Khabib have done. So, very impressive, but life moves on, divisions move on, and I'm interested to see what happens."
What’s Next for Medic and Makhachev?
Uros Medic is currently on a four-fight winning streak and set to fight Kevin Holland at UFC 334 later this month. Meanwhile, Makhachev’s next appearance might not happen until mid-2027, leaving plenty of time for fans to wonder about his next chapter.
