Hampshire Withdraws Scott Kuggeleijn After Supporter Backlash

Hampshire have performed a sharp U-turn on the decision to field New Zealand all-rounder Scott Kuggeleijn, withdrawing him from selection after a wave of criticism from staff and supporters.

Kuggeleijn, 34, had been quietly named in the squad for the County Championship fixture against Warwickshire, his inclusion appearing on the team sheet on Tuesday without the usual fanfare or social media announcement that normally accompanies a new signing at the Utilita Bowl.

The low-key approach did not keep it quiet for long. Reaction on social media was swift and hostile, centring on Kuggeleijn’s past. He faced a rape charge in 2015 and, after a re-trial prompted by a hung jury, was acquitted in 2017.

By Wednesday morning, with the first ball of the Warwickshire match looming, the pressure told. Less than an hour before the start of play, Hampshire confirmed that Kuggeleijn would not feature in the game or in any of their remaining four County Championship fixtures this season.

He was understood to be at the Utilita Bowl on the opening day, but his involvement ended there.

Kuggeleijn’s record on the field is substantial. A seasoned seamer and lower-order hitter, he has spent 12 years with Northern Districts in New Zealand domestic cricket and has represented the Black Caps in three Tests, two one-day internationals and 18 T20s.

Hampshire’s move to step away from the signing comes at a fraught moment on the pitch. They sit bottom of Division One on 86 points, 16 adrift of Leicestershire, the side immediately above them. With only two red-ball wins all season, five defeats and three draws, their campaign has unravelled into a relegation battle.

The club now has to fight that battle without the on-field help they had clearly hoped Kuggeleijn would provide, and with the knowledge that their supporters have drawn a firm line on who they want representing Hampshire in the weeks that will define their season.
