Zaheer Khan Appointed Head Coach of CSK for IPL 2027

Chennai Super Kings have turned to one of India’s finest left-arm quicks to steer them into a new era, naming Zaheer Khan as head coach for IPL 2027 and drawing a definitive line under the Stephen Fleming age.

Fleming’s departure, after an extraordinary 18-year association with the franchise, leaves a gap that is as much emotional as tactical. He has been the calm voice in the dugout for almost the entirety of CSK’s modern history, the architect behind multiple titles and the steady hand through suspensions, rebuilds and revivals. Now he moves on to a full-time role with England, having been appointed their men’s Test head coach in July.

CSK have chosen pedigree to replace legacy.

Zaheer, 45, has lived almost every possible role in the modern T20 ecosystem since bowing out of the IPL as a player in 2017. He turned out for three franchises – Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals – across 100 IPL matches, collecting 102 wickets at 27.27. Those numbers sit on top of a storied India career in which he claimed 610 international wickets and led attacks in some of the country’s most successful years.

He has not been idle since.

Mumbai Indians first pulled him into their think-tank, appointing him Director of Cricket Operations ahead of IPL 2019. From there, he moved into the role of head of global development, shaping pathways and talent structures for one of the league’s most powerful outfits. More recently, he stepped into a more hands-on role again as mentor of Lucknow Super Giants for IPL 2025, before parting ways with the franchise ahead of the following season.

Now comes the biggest assignment of his off-field career.

“It’s an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL,” Zaheer said in a statement released by CSK, capturing both the scale of the job and the allure of the yellow jersey.

He knows the rivalry from the other side, too. “As a cricketer, I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests. The atmosphere created by the Superfans at Chepauk make it even more special. I can’t wait to join the legacy franchise with such a rich history.”

That word – legacy – is not thrown around lightly in Chennai. The franchise has built an identity on continuity, loyalty and a clear way of playing. Handing the keys to Zaheer signals trust not just in his name, but in his ability to shape a new core while respecting what has gone before.

Owner Rupa Gurunath underlined that balance between past and future as she welcomed him into the fold. “We are pleased to confirm Zaheer Khan as the Head Coach for Chennai Super Kings. Zaheer’s distinguished playing career and proven ability to nurture young talent make him a valuable addition to our setup. We are confident that his guidance will help strengthen the core of this franchise.”

That “core” has been CSK’s calling card: senior pros supported by a carefully managed conveyor belt of domestic talent. Zaheer’s track record with young fast bowlers and his strategic nous at Mumbai Indians fit neatly into that template. He has long been regarded as one of the sharpest cricketing minds in Indian dressing rooms, a bowler who built his success on reading conditions, batters and moments better than most.

KS Viswanathan, CSK’s Managing Director, leaned heavily on that reputation as he framed the appointment. “Zaheer is a world class bowler and has been a mentor to many young cricketers, especially fast bowlers, over the years. As a player, Zaheer was one of the key reasons for India’s success in the 2000s. He’s one of the finest cricketing brains and we look forward to having him in our family.”

The word “family” has long been part of CSK’s internal vocabulary. Now that family is bracing for change. No Fleming. A new voice in team meetings. A new vision for an attack that has often relied on canny spinners and clever variations rather than out-and-out pace.

Zaheer, the bowler who mastered both craft and confrontation, walks into a dressing room that still expects to compete for titles every season. The Chepauk crowd will demand nothing less. The question now is not whether he understands pressure. It’s how quickly he can turn his reading of the game into another long chapter of success in yellow.
