Why Cristiano Ronaldo Is Sitting Out Portugal's Match Against Norway

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Absence from Portugal’s Lineup

The spotlight is on Cristiano Ronaldo as he remains off the pitch for Portugal’s clash with Norway. The iconic striker, now 41, continues to stir debate during this international break. Despite a strong start under new coach Jorge Jesus, who secured three wins in his opening matches, Ronaldo has not featured.

Portugal’s Start Under Jorge Jesus

Jorge Jesus began his tenure with tight victories: a narrow win over Wales, followed by away wins against Norway and Denmark. Portugal currently leads their UEFA Nations League group with full points. Still, the new coach’s period hasn’t been free of tension, largely due to Ronaldo’s situation.

What Led to Ronaldo Sitting Out?

Ronaldo’s fiery temperament became clear after he was benched for Portugal’s match against Norway last week, a decision that sparked controversy. Following a poor performance against Wales and an early substitution, Jesus chose not to start Ronaldo in Oslo. Although the coach hinted Ronaldo would get some time on the field, he remained an unused substitute as Portugal held on for a 2–1 victory.

Jesus explained, “I can promise whatever I want, I’m the coach. No player will ever make a decision for me.” Ronaldo reacted strongly, upset by both the benching and the coach’s comments.

Afterward, Ronaldo decided to leave the national team camp immediately, ruling himself out of Portugal’s 4–2 win over Denmark and the upcoming home game versus Norway.

Ronaldo’s Statement

“After the press conference of the National Team coach, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I decided to leave the National Team camp,” Ronaldo wrote on social media.“In due time, I will tell all the Portuguese about the reasons that motivated my departure from the national team, which I always dedicated myself to.“Now it’s time to wish good luck to Portugal and all my teammates, without exception.”

The absence of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner continues to raise questions about his future with Portugal, especially as the team prepares to face an Erling Haaland-led Norway side.

Support from Portugal Fans

After more than two decades of representing Portugal, many fans have rallied behind Ronaldo. Some even put up billboards around Lisbon and nearby areas, praising his contributions and leadership.

  • Billboard Message: “Thank you Cristiano Ronaldo for everything you’ve done for Portugal. You will always be our captain. Portugal is always with you.”
  • Criticism of Jorge Jesus: Fans accused the coach of mistreating Ronaldo and having an inflated ego.

The ongoing dispute presents a challenge for the Portuguese Football Federation as the saga shows no signs of fading.
