WBC Orders Unification Bout Between William Zepeda and Jadier Herrera
WBC Mandates William Zepeda vs. Jadier Herrera for Lightweight Title
The World Boxing Council (WBC) has taken the uncommon move of consolidating its lightweight titles by ordering a fight between reigning champion William Zepeda and interim champion Jadier Herrera. Both fighters have until October 20th to reach an agreement for the bout.
Frank Warren confirmed this development following earlier reports. This matchup comes as part of the WBC’s efforts to streamline their titles after some shifts in the lightweight division.
Background on the Fighters and Titles
With Shakur Stevenson moving up in weight class to challenge Teofimo Lopez for the super lightweight title, the interim title became available. Herrera, boasting an undefeated record of 18-0 with 16 knockouts, took advantage of this opportunity by defeating veteran Ricardo Nunez decisively to claim the interim belt.
The WBC later stripped Stevenson due to unpaid sanctioning fees. Instead of simply promoting Herrera or putting him in a fight for a vacant title, the WBC allowed William Zepeda—who holds a record of 34-1 with 27 KOs—to fight Lamont Roach Jr. for the official lightweight championship in August, where Zepeda secured the real title.
What’s Next in the Lightweight Division?
Zepeda presents a serious challenge in the lightweight scene, especially given his youth at 24 years old and recent victory over Lamont Roach Jr. Despite some questions about his previous best win coming against a less formidable opponent and a disqualification loss to Jon Fernandez, he is eager for the unification clash.
The path seems clear for Herrera to get his shot unless Zepeda opts to face Abdullah Mason for unification or abandons the title altogether, which is becoming a more common trend.
