Usama Mir Returns to Worcestershire for Championship Run-in

Worcestershire have turned to a familiar face for their Championship run-in, bringing Pakistan leg-spinner Usama Mir back to New Road for the remainder of the season.

Mir, who made his first-class debut for the Pears in 2023, has been re-signed as a replacement for all-rounder Beyers Swanepoel and will be available for the club’s final three Division Two fixtures. That spell includes Tuesday’s home clash with Northamptonshire, a game that could go a long way to shaping Worcestershire’s finish to the campaign.

This is no speculative punt. Mir has already been part of the club’s plans this year, featuring in white-ball cricket after agreeing a three-year T20 deal earlier in the season. From 2027, he will be registered as a ‘local’ player, underlining how firmly Worcestershire see him in their long-term picture.

For now, though, the move is about the here and now: control, experience and a proven wrist-spinner at a time of year when pitches can tire and games can stretch deep.

“Usama is someone we know very well and is a high-class operator who will bring plenty of experience to our side for the final three County Championship matches,” head coach Alan Richardson told the club’s website. The message was clear: this is a trusted solution, not a stopgap.

The timing has been tight. Swanepoel’s absence forced Worcestershire into the market late, with little room for hesitation. “Given the short turnaround we had to act swiftly to find a replacement, so to be able to add him to the squad before Tuesday is a real boost for us,” Richardson said.
