AC Milan Faces Major Setback as Tomori Injured Before Derby
AC Milan’s week has gone from bad to worse. Days after a bruising 4-2 defeat to Bologna, they have lost one of their defensive pillars at the worst possible moment: Fikayo Tomori will be out for around a month with a thigh injury and will miss the Derby della Madonnina against Inter.
For a team already walking a tightrope in defence, this is a major jolt.
Injury from an unfamiliar role
Tomori’s problem stems from that chaotic night against Bologna, where he was pushed into an unusual role at right-back. It was a tactical gamble born of necessity, but it lasted only 45 minutes.
He felt discomfort during the first half and did not re-emerge after the interval. Subsequent checks revealed an injury to the medial flexor muscle in his right thigh, according to Sky Sport Italia. The standard recovery time: about four weeks.
The diagnosis removes any lingering hope of a late miracle. Tomori is officially out of the derby. No half-fit cameo, no bench option, nothing. Milan will walk into San Siro’s split cauldron without one of their most reliable competitors.
Blow that stretches beyond Inter
The derby is the headline, but the damage stretches well past the weekend.
Tomori will sit out the clash with Ferencvaros and the league meeting with Genoa before the November international break. That alone would be worrying for a side already juggling domestic ambitions with European demands.
The real crunch comes after the pause. Milan’s calendar tightens, and the margins shrink.
When Serie A resumes, Tomori is expected to miss the home game against Frosinone on November 22, a European test against Olympiacos on November 26, and the league fixture with Cagliari on November 30. Three matches in eight days, all without their English centre-back.
For the coaching staff, it is more than a selection issue; it is a structural one. Tomori’s pace, aggression and recovery runs underpin how high and how brave Milan can defend. Take that away, and the entire back line has to be recalibrated.
Defensive depth under strain
This stretch was always going to define a chunk of Milan’s season. Now it will also test the depth of their defensive unit.
Every decision at the back suddenly carries extra weight. Rotations become risks. Any further setback could force square pegs into round holes again, just as happened with Tomori at right-back in Bologna.
The timing could hardly be worse. Inter, Ferencvaros, Genoa, Frosinone, Olympiacos, Cagliari: it is a run that demands both resilience and continuity. Instead, Milan must improvise.
A sliver of good news
Amid the frustration, there is at least a sliver of relief. Milan are optimistic about welcoming back three important players in time for the derby.
Mario Gila, Diego Moreira and Adrien Rabiot are all progressing well in their recoveries and are pushing to be available for the showdown with Inter. Their returns would inject fresh legs and experience into a squad suddenly stripped of one of its defensive leaders.
Even so, the equation is clear. Milan head into one of the defining spells of their campaign without Fikayo Tomori. How they cope with that absence may say as much about their season as the derby result itself.
