Stephen Curry Set to Play Season Opener After Ankle Injury at Practice
Stephen Curry Cleared for Season Opener Despite Ankle Injury
Stephen Curry faced a scare during Sunday’s open practice with the Golden State Warriors when he twisted his right ankle. The injury happened as Curry was handling the ball near the top of the key at the Chase Center. He immediately stopped, showed frustration by pounding the ball on the court, and limped off to the bench before heading to the locker room.
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr reassured fans that Curry’s knee — which had troubled him last season — was not affected by this incident. By Monday, Kerr confirmed that Curry had practiced fully with the team and will be ready to play in Wednesday night’s season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers.
"Always, always," Kerr said when asked if he was worried after seeing Curry limp off the court, according to the San Francisco Chronicle's Luca Evans. "He’s fine. I talked to him after he went downstairs, and I checked in with the training room."
Last season, Curry averaged 26.6 points and 4.7 assists per game but only played 43 games due to a lingering right knee injury. That injury contributed to the Warriors finishing with a 37-45 record and missing the playoffs for the second time in three years. Recently, Curry signed a two-year contract extension worth $116 million with the Warriors.
Despite the brief injury scare during practice, it looks like Curry is on track to start the 2026-27 season as planned, leading the Warriors against their longtime rivals, the Lakers.
