Stan Wawrinka’s Final Season: The Players He Defeated Before Retiring

Stan Wawrinka Ends Career After Swiss Indoors

Stan Wawrinka has closed the chapter on his professional tennis journey, with his last match played at the Swiss Indoors in Basel. In his final tournament, he lost to Jiri Lehecka in the opening round, marking the end of a 24-year career.

The Swiss star finishes with an impressive record of 590 ATP Tour wins, including three Grand Slam titles, one Masters 1000 victory, and an Olympic gold medal in doubles.

A Look Back at Wawrinka’s 2026 Season

The 41-year-old player decided to retire before the 2026 season began but still managed to secure 10 wins out of 32 matches. His season kicked off well during the United Cup, where he defeated then world No. 27 and 2025 Shanghai Masters finalist Arthur Rinderknech.

Wawrinka also had a strong showing at the Australian Open, reaching the third round for the first time since 2020. He won two tough matches against Laslo Djere and Arthur Gea, with the win over Gea being his last Grand Slam victory. After that, early exits followed at Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the US Open.

Later in the year, Wawrinka struggled to string consecutive wins together. His final career victory came at the ATP 250 event in Lyon, where he beat 16-year-old Martin Landaluce in three sets, becoming one of the oldest players to win an ATP match.

Legacy Beyond 2026

Even though Wawrinka didn’t notch many victories in his final year, his career highlights are remarkable. Throughout his career, he faced Jannik Sinner six times and won twice, but he never met Carlos Alcaraz on the court.
