Seren Smale Returns to Glamorgan: Landmark Signing for Women's Cricket

Glamorgan have brought one of Wales’ brightest cricketing talents back over the border, sealing the signing of wicketkeeper-batter Seren Smale from Lancashire in a statement move for their women’s programme.

The Wrexham-born 21-year-old, already capped in T20 internationals by England, has agreed a three-year deal as the county gears up for Tier One status in 2027. For Glamorgan, it is recruitment with a clear message. For Smale, it is a return to her roots.

“Being Welsh and being able to represent Glamorgan professionally brings me so much excitement,” she said. “It’s where I started my cricket journey and I can’t wait to see what this next chapter brings.”

From Buckley to the big stage

Smale’s path back to Wales began at Buckley Cricket Club, where she first picked up a bat and gloves before progressing rapidly through the ranks. Her performances earned a place with Thunder, where she became a regular between 2021 and 2024, and a reputation as a modern, attacking keeper-batter.

That rise took her onto the international stage. Smale represented England at the 2022 ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup and has since broken into the senior T20 side, earning two caps and vital experience in high-pressure environments. She has also featured in The Hundred, adding another layer of top-level exposure to an already impressive CV.

Now, she returns to the country of her birth with the chance to help shape a new era for Glamorgan.

A key piece in Glamorgan’s long-term plan

Glamorgan’s head of women and girls cricket, Aimee Rees, made no attempt to hide how central Smale was to the club’s long-term vision.

“We’re absolutely delighted to have Seren join Glamorgan for the next three years,” Rees said. “She is incredibly proud to be Welsh, and she was someone we identified early as a key target for our recruitment strategy.”

The club sees Smale as far more than a signing for the here and now. She is expected to be a cornerstone of the side that enters Tier One in 2027, bringing both quality and experience to a squad being built with that step up firmly in mind.

Rees underlined exactly what Glamorgan believe they are getting.

“She brings real quality and valuable experience to our squad, with experience in The Hundred and at international level. We know she will make a big impact, and we’re excited to see her continue to develop and perform on the biggest stages in a Glamorgan shirt.”

Smale will link up with her new teammates later this year for pre-season preparations ahead of the 2027 campaign, giving the coaching staff ample time to bed her into the side and shape the batting order around her strengths.

A growing professional core

Smale’s arrival comes at a time of rapid growth for Glamorgan’s women’s set-up. The club has already moved to secure a core of full-time professionals, signalling a serious intent to compete when the new structure fully takes hold.

Batter Bethan Gammon, the 25-year-old from Pontypridd, has joined the professional ranks, signing with Glamorgan alongside all-rounder Bethan Ellis and batter/wicketkeeper Abbey Freeborn. Both Ellis and Freeborn have spent the last two seasons on loan from Warwickshire and now make the move permanent.

They join captain Lauren Parfitt as Glamorgan’s first full-time female players, a foundational group around which the county hopes to build a sustainable, competitive side.

Add Smale’s energy, international know-how and deep connection to Wales into that mix, and Glamorgan’s women’s team suddenly looks less like a project on paper and more like a squad ready to grow into the spotlight.
