Rohit Sharma's IPL Loyalty to Mumbai Indians

Rohit Sharma has worn many colours in the IPL. He has lifted six trophies, five of them with Mumbai Indians, and built a legacy that sits alongside the very best the league has seen. But for all the noise over the years about a possible move away from Mumbai, his answer on live television this week could not have been clearer.

On Sony’s show Family Time with Rohit Sharma, the former India captain was in relaxed, playful mood. Across from him sat Abhishek Nayar, old Mumbai teammate, close friend and now head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders. It did not take long for the conversation to drift into franchise territory.

Nayar spotted Rohit in yellow and pounced. Was that, he joked, a hint at his next destination? The tease carried an obvious subtext: Chennai Super Kings. He pushed a little more, telling Rohit he would look good in purple and gold as well — the colours of KKR, the team Nayar now helps shape from the dugout.

The studio crowd sensed the opening. The banter about CSK and KKR barely had time to settle before the chants rolled down from the audience: “Mumbai, Mumbai”. This was Rohit’s court, and they wanted a declaration.

He gave them one word.

“Forever,” he replied, aligning himself once again with the franchise he has led to five IPL titles and turned into a modern powerhouse. No grand speech, no elaborate defence of loyalty. Just a single, loaded answer that will echo warmly among Mumbai Indians fans who have watched rumours swirl around their long-time captain for years.

For a player who joined MI back in 2011 and has since become their defining figure, it was another small but telling moment. Joint-most successful captain in IPL history, six-time champion, still the face of the franchise in the minds of many — and, at least for now, in no mood to swap blue for any other shade.

What comes next for Rohit with India

Away from the IPL spotlight, another chapter in Rohit’s international career is about to be written.

He will next turn out for India in a three-match ODI series against West Indies, starting September 27, a Sunday. The series arrives after a period of intense speculation about his future in the national set-up. Following the England tour earlier this year, strong rumours suggested Rohit might not be in India’s plans any longer.

The BCCI shut that talk down. Even so, questions lingered over whether he would make the squad for the West Indies ODIs, and now a different debate has taken hold: could this be his final assignment in India colours?

Rohit has already stepped away from T20Is and Tests, trimming his international workload down to just one format. ODIs are his last frontier, and there is one gaping hole in an otherwise glittering résumé — the ODI World Cup.

He came agonisingly close in 2023, leading India to a home final only to see Australia snatch the trophy in Ahmedabad. It remains the one major prize missing from his cabinet, the one that keeps being thrown back into the conversation whenever his future is discussed.

That naturally drags the story towards 2027. The next ODI World Cup, to be played across South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe, looms as both an opportunity and a question mark. Rohit will be 40 by then. Can he stretch his career that far? Will India want him to?

For now, he is not rushing into any declarations.

“October 2027 is far away; we will see about it then,” he said earlier when pressed on whether he would aim for that World Cup.

So the picture is split. In the IPL, Rohit’s “Forever” to Mumbai Indians feels like a firm, emotional anchor in a league built on movement and churn. In international cricket, the horizon is hazier. The West Indies series will offer clues — not just about his batting, but about how long he intends to keep chasing that one missing trophy.
