Rio Ngumoha's Future: Liverpool Secures Young Winger Amid Arsenal's Search

Arsenal have been circling. Bayern Munich were linked in the summer. Europe’s talent scouts have taken note. Yet all roads for Rio Ngumoha now appear to lead back to Anfield.

Liverpool’s 18-year-old winger, a player the club privately view as a cornerstone of their next attacking era, is moving towards a new long-term contract that would shut the door on any immediate exit and, crucially, leave Arsenal looking elsewhere yet again for a left-sided solution.

Arsenal’s winger problem, Liverpool’s resolve

Arsenal entered 2027 hunting a left winger and have been chasing shadows ever since. Moves for Morgan Rogers and Vinicius Junior failed over the summer. Gabriel Martinelli departed without a like-for-like replacement arriving, and the champions have been left patching together options on that flank.

David Ornstein has already hinted that something could happen in January, with Arsenal expected to be active if the right opportunity appears. For a brief moment, that opportunity looked like Ngumoha.

Liverpool, though, never saw it that way.

TEAMtalk revealed earlier this month that Liverpool and Ngumoha’s camp had reached an agreement in principle on a lucrative new deal. The framework is there; the club and player are now working through the details to turn it into a binding contract. According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, nobody on Merseyside expects late drama. The mood is calm. The expectation: Ngumoha stays.

Liverpool’s stance has been clear. They want him in the team now, not just on the books. O’Rourke has indicated the teenager is set for regular starts this season, a key factor in convincing him that his future is best served under the lights of Anfield rather than in someone else’s project.

“Not for sale” – and they meant it

Fabrizio Romano’s reporting only underlines the picture. Throughout the summer, as rumours swirled around Bayern Munich and other clubs, Liverpool’s message never shifted: Ngumoha was not leaving, not for sale, not even up for negotiation.

No meetings. No softening. Just a firm belief that Rio Ngumoha is Liverpool’s future.

That conviction has been backed by action. The club have mapped out a pathway, and the player has bought into it. Talks over the new contract are active, with both sides working to find the right balance on guarantees and details. The process is still ongoing, but the direction of travel is obvious.

Arsenal watch on – and wait

The Gunners’ interest has a simple logic. They lost Martinelli, did not bring in a direct replacement, and reshaped their options by moving on from Leandro Trossard and bringing in Christos Tzolis. It left a gap on the left that a talent like Ngumoha could fill for a decade.

Arsenal, as Romano pointed out, always scan the market for elite opportunities. If there is a chance to sign Ngumoha in 2027, 2028 or beyond, they will be in the queue. They will not be alone. Clubs from abroad are expected to circle as his reputation grows.

Right now, though, they are watching a door close.

Liverpool are pushing to lock down one of the most highly regarded young wingers in Europe, and the player is content where he is. The contract still needs signatures. The guarantees still need to be right. But the momentum is all on Liverpool’s side.

The champions wanted a left winger. They may have to accept that Rio Ngumoha is staying exactly where he is – and that the next great wide star at Anfield will not be wearing red in north London.
