New Zealand’s build‑up to a heavyweight home series against India has been jolted by an off‑field mishap. Star all‑rounder Rachin Ravindra has dislocated his right shoulder while filming a commercial in Auckland, putting his availability for the upcoming Twenty20 series in serious doubt.

The 26-year-old suffered the injury on Wednesday during a shoot with broadcaster Sky, attempting a jumping catch for the cameras. What should have been a routine stunt for one of world cricket’s rising names instead left him facing a race against time.

Initial medical assessments from New Zealand Cricket have at least offered a sliver of relief: scans revealed no significant structural damage. The joint, though, still needs careful management, and his return will hinge on how the shoulder responds in the crucial first weeks of rehabilitation. For now, there is no firm date circled on the calendar.

Mike Sandle, New Zealand’s national team performance manager, labelled the episode an unfortunate accident. He stressed that the activities for the commercial had been signed off by all parties beforehand and carried out under agreed safety measures. Even so, he confirmed that the processes around such external engagements will come under review after one of the country’s key players was sidelined in such avoidable fashion.

Ravindra’s potential absence would be a major blow. Across formats he has already racked up 115 appearances for New Zealand, slotting in comfortably either at the top or in the middle order and offering control with his left-arm finger spin. At the 2023 50-over World Cup he emerged as New Zealand’s leading run-scorer, then followed it up at this year’s Twenty20 World Cup by taking more wickets than any of his teammates.

Those twin returns underlined his evolution from promising youngster into all-format pillar. Now, with India due in town for a demanding tour, New Zealand may have to reimagine both their batting balance and spin options at short notice.

The series begins with five Twenty20 internationals from October 22, a high-tempo opening to a tour that then stretches into five One Day Internationals and two Test matches next month. India’s depth will test every layer of New Zealand’s squad.

Whether Ravindra can play any part in that opening T20 leg now rests on how quickly that right shoulder settles. For a player who has become central to New Zealand’s plans in every format, the next few weeks of rehab could shape the tone of the entire home summer.
