French Authorities Address PSG vs Barcelona Match Amid Paris Unrest

Paris Unrest Casts Doubt on PSG vs Barcelona Clash

Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League match against Barcelona faces uncertainty as protests grip the French capital. Riots over the weekend triggered more than 1,800 arrests, with clashes between demonstrators and security forces leading to partial curfews in several parts of Paris.

The game at Parc des Princes, scheduled for Tuesday night in the third Champions League matchweek, has prompted calls for postponement amid rising social tensions.

French Police Push for Postponement

A representative from the French police union reportedly urged that the match be delayed, fearing further violent outbreaks. According to French news source AlertesInfos, this request comes as the fixture represents one of the most significant matches in the current Champions League season, pitting two European title contenders against each other.

PSG, led by Luis Enrique, currently top their group with a flawless record, including a 6-1 win over Slovan Bratislava and a 4-2 victory at Manchester City. Meanwhile, Hansi Flick’s Barcelona follow in second place after strong wins against Feyenoord (5-1) and Galatasaray (4-1).

Government Confirms Match Will Proceed

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez spoke out, assuring that there are no intentions to postpone the PSG versus Barcelona fixture or any other Champions League games. In an interview with Onze Mondial, he emphasized that the matches will continue as planned without doubt.

At his pre-match press conference, PSG coach Luis Enrique expressed hope that the game would take place smoothly. He remarked, "I am not the person who should be talking about it. I'm here to talk about football. Obviously, we don't like this kind of violence, but that's how society evolves. I can only focus on football. I hope that the match will go well."

Previous Safety Concerns in Football Scheduling

This is not the first instance this year where postponing or rescheduling a match due to safety concerns has been considered. Before the World Cup Round of 16 match between Mexico and England, FIFA reportedly weighed adjusting kick-off times because of severe weather and overcrowding following celebrations in Mexico City that sadly resulted in four fan deaths.
