Potential Successors to Michael Carrick as Manchester United Manager

Michael Carrick is struggling to keep his role as Manchester United manager amid a challenging start to the season. Following a home loss to Bournemouth, which extended the club's winless streak to eight matches across all competitions, the pressure on Carrick has intensified. This marks the worst season start in four decades for United since minority owners Ineos assumed control of football operations.

The situation worsened after a heavy 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League, followed by the 3-0 home defeat against Bournemouth. Fans were seen leaving Old Trafford in large numbers during the second half of that match. United captain Bruno Fernandes criticized Carrick’s tactics and was benched during the Bournemouth game, signaling deep concerns within the squad.

While the issues at the club run deeper than the head coach, defender Lisandro Martinez pointed out the broader challenges after the Atletico Madrid loss earlier this month. Despite this, Carrick’s position appears fragile, with the club already exploring possible replacements following the departures of former managers Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim.

At a recent press conference, Carrick spoke passionately for nearly six minutes about the importance of sacrifice, humility, and dedication, emphasizing the values he believes represent Manchester United.

Who Could Take Over the Reins?

Eddie Howe

Eddie Howe, who left Newcastle United unexpectedly during the summer, is a leading candidate. The 48-year-old Englishman is well-regarded for transforming Newcastle from relegation candidates into a side that achieved their best Premier League finish in twenty years and secured the club’s first domestic trophy in seven decades—the Carabao Cup in 2025. Howe’s energetic, high-intensity style aligns well with what many expect at Old Trafford, making him a favorite among bookmakers.

Fabian Hurzeler

Fabian Hurzeler, Brighton’s 33-year-old manager, has impressed by turning the Seagulls into genuine competitors in the Premier League. Brighton’s 3-0 triumph over Arsenal and their 3-2 Carabao Cup victory over United at Old Trafford highlight his tactical prowess. While Hurzeler is admired by some at United, Brighton’s demand for significant compensation and the financial instability at United might pose obstacles. Hurzeler himself remains focused on his current project, stressing the value of time and connection in building a team.

"I'm fully focused on my job here. I have a lot of respect for Michael Carrick and the job he has done at Manchester United last season. He’s a great human being and personality," said Hurzeler.

Julian Nagelsmann

The young German coach Julian Nagelsmann was reportedly considered by United earlier this year. Having managed top teams like Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig, Nagelsmann is available and would likely be interested in the Manchester United role. United’s recruitment director Christopher Vivell has prior connections with Nagelsmann from Red Bull, potentially easing negotiations.

Unai Emery

Unai Emery has enjoyed success with Aston Villa, securing Champions League qualification and ending their trophy drought with a Europa League win. Despite United’s interest, Villa are keen to keep Emery, who holds a contract until 2029 and has full control over the squad overhaul underway. Taking him would require compensation and a willingness to give Emery similar authority, a challenge given Old Trafford’s current state.

Antonio Conte

The demanding Antonio Conte could bring the intensity United lacks. With Serie A titles at Juventus, Inter Milan, Napoli, and a Premier League title at Chelsea, his credentials are impressive. Conte improved Tottenham significantly but left amid conflict in 2023 after publicly criticizing club management. His fiery approach carries risks, but his ability to produce results is notable.

Conte stated: "Following a successful spell with Napoli, I will take the time I need to consider how and when to return. Reports about financial demands and personality issues are unfounded."

Cesc Fabregas

Cesc Fabregas, now managing Como, gained attention after his team’s stunning 4-1 win over United in the Champions League. As a former star of Arsenal, Barcelona, and Chelsea, Fabregas is seen as one of Europe’s promising young coaches. However, he remains committed to Como, holding a stake in the club and focusing on their debut Champions League campaign. Returning to a major club may come later in his career.

Another Interim Appointment?

Manchester United has previously turned to internal interim managers when in turmoil. Before Carrick took over in January, Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher led the team for two games. Earlier, Ruud van Nistelrooy served as caretaker between ten Hag’s departure and Amorim’s arrival. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also experienced cycles of ups and downs during his time as interim and permanent manager. United might again rely on a former player familiar with the club’s culture to steady the ship, possibly prompting Fletcher to step up once more.
